I open my door to an empty street. I search for the person who rang my doorbell. I saw no one. I was retreating back inside when something catches my eye. I look down to see a book. It was brown with a leather cover that felt rough to my touch. I pick it up and open it to the first page. The smell of fresh parchment fills my nose. I find something, a note, there for me.
"Dear Luke,
I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm writing this note as my last farewell. Thank you so much for everything. I will always remember you. I part only asking for one favor. Publish my story. Let the world know what I've been through. Please. I don't want anyone to go through what I went through. I'm sorry. Good bye Lucas Fletcher Flanagan. I love you.
Carmen Autumn Grace. "
My fingers go numb. What does this mean? Is she running away? She wouldn't do something that impulsive, she's too sensible! I remember the accident. It shattered Carmen, of course she's going to act irrationally. I walk inside and sit on the couch. I stare blankly at the wall, only breaking gaze when I have to blink. The memory of that day washes over me. I shiver. I look down at the book. Carmen has to be going through much more pain than I have been enduring. I need to help her, and reading this book will tell me how. I hastily open it and start reading. I must save Carmen.
