"Thank you!" I call to the security guard after passing through the metal detectors and getting my plastic ID. I skipped down to the room it said on my work sheet and knocked gently where I was greeted with a women in a red dress and high heels.
"My name is Miranda" I extend my hand and we shake.
"I'm N-Charlie" it has been a hard time getting used to my new name but I liked the way it gave me a fresh start.
She showed me to the elevator where we rode up to the top floor and she told me all about her family's history with the company.
"Are you the CEO? Madam?" She shakes her head and laughs.
"Oh no! Please call me Miranda. Well my husband did however, now the leadership of the company belongs to my son." She finished her sentence with a sense of pride and worry.
We enter an office with large glass doors and a beautiful mahogany desk in the middle of the room complete with chair and a small couch on the side of the room. She urged me to sit on the small couch and she stood and cleared her throat.
"This will be your office. Usually it belonged to the CEO's assistant but she is going to be having a baby soon and we needed a replacement as soon as possible." I nod not sure I understand what she is getting at.
"And you want me to work with the new replacement" she laughs again and shakes her head.
"Honey, you are the replacement" I stare at her and open my mouth slightly before shaking off the shock.
She is gone by the time I focus and yell "thank you!" Down the hall after her. I moved slowly to the desk and sat down feeling the wood and spinning around taking it all in.
If they could see me now I thought with a smile and reminisced on the past school year.
James and I were together for a while then I went away to figure things out. When I came back he had a new girlfriend, more money, and a new hobby called alcoholism. After a while we had tried to work things out but eventually I left for the big city and left that part of my life behind. Now I am in college at one of the top schools in New York and am the personal assistant of the CEO in one of the biggest companies in the world.
I inwardly sighed and only wished Boston. My best friend was here to share the moment with me. I dialed her number and waited until I received the same voicemail as I had been getting for the past few months. I let it go and looked down at the phone where a red button was blinking continuously.
I pressed it and said, "hello"
Here we go.
