Well, it's not THE beginning because I don't remember how we started to talk. I only remember that ever since then, we haven't stopped. Let me tell you about her. She is a girl with long brown hair, she barely brushes it but it always looks so good. Her eyes are like milk coffee, so big and beautiful, that you get captivated by them. Her skin is soft and gentle but rough at the same time, she has bruises on her body and never says a word about them. Her semi-pale skin is tainted with red little by little. She has this swag and this look that nobody can mistake when she walks in. She wears what she feels like and rocks it all the time. She has a certain mystery to her that I just can't seem to be curious about. She is everything I'm not; I am the typical girl who does nothing but write stuff in a notebook. I am the girl who tries way too hard to be cute and ends up failing. I am a complete disaster when it comes to feelings and all those things.
"Dude, can you not do that for once in your life?" Her voice is so soft and bubbly, she looks at me as I close my notebook. "Um, I can try," I say and she laughs, taking my notebook from me, putting it in her bag. "Alright, well now you have no choice, come on, we are at the beach, your first day back from college and all you do is homework." I look at her and bite my bottom lip, I always do that when I am around her. "Well, it's not like you missed me much," I say and move my gaze to my hand, clicking my pen back in so it doesn't dry up. Her smile dies down and she looks out to the water. "What makes you say that?" I hear those words come out of her mouth and all the memories of my attempts to talk with her come back to mind, how she would ignore my calls and text because she was too busy. "Just, stuff that has happened," I say and breathe in softly, moving my hand into my bag, moving the sand out of it. "You used to love the beach...what happened to you?" She asks me and I stop my movements, I look at the ocean and take a small breath in. "You used to love sitting here and spending time with me and the rest and talking about the sky and stupid theories and now you can barely do something as simple as look at the waves crash" I look at her as she said this and smile. "You used to love it also, but you changed, you look at this scenario differently, you admire the waves but not with the same content you used to have...why question me?" She locks eyes with me and shifts her gaze quickly to the water again. "Because I am not the same person you left," She says and stands up. I look at her and watch her walk to the water, getting her feet wet by the salty water, she turns to me and holds her hand out. I understand very well what she wants and get up following her footsteps. Our hands interlock and she walks deeper into the water. By now we are knee-deep and she stops. "You remember that one time we climbed the rocks with all of the gang before everything got to where it is now?" I nod and smile. "I remember when I fell and scrapped my leg because the rock was filled with mole," I say and she looks at me, giving me a small smile. "Now we can't go there, they closed it because a kid died there...It used to be fun" Her hand got loose and she abandoned mine, it felt so empty. I take a deep breath in and look at her, seems I forget how to breathe when she is around. "You remember Nicki's mom, she used to throw those amazing parties for him?" I smile softly and nod "I remember Misses Johnson, she was the best, I still can't believe she is gone" She walks around and moves her long tangled hair back. "Yeah, he hasn't been the same ever since, who would be thou" I move my leg a little and see the water getting blurry and I side smile softly. "Life is filled with surprises," I say to myself and keep staring at the foggy reflection of me. "Kayla, you called me here, why?" She asked and walked to me, pulling my chin up. "You never do this" I smile at her and shake my head. "Just missed you, can't I miss you?" I ask and I see her eyebrows move up and a smile creeps on her face. "I guess you can" Her hand moves away from my chin and moves to my hand, she entwines them together again and I take a breath. "Jo, tomorrow I invited the old gang to my house, can you come?" I ask her and she smiles. "Of course, I'll get to see everyone again, I hope they don't end up throwing stuff" She laughs and I admire her. "Yeah, last time Nicki almost broke Lamar's nose," I say and have a small flashback of two strong males fighting over the last shot of whiskey. I shake my head and hear my watch make a sound. I look at it and jump. "I have to go, I'll see you tomorrow ok," I say and give Jo a hug and a small kiss on the cheek. "Come around 5, "I say and start walking out of the water, grabbing my stuff, and running to my car. I drove away not before looking at her one last time for today.
Jo staid behind, moving her hand to her cheek, still feeling the warmth of my lips on them, looking as my car drove away from my view, she smiled softly and walked to the blanket, lying against my bag a small leather book was, "She forgot her notebook" Jo mentions to herself and get up, folding the blanket and stuffing it in her bag. Feeling the night come along, she put the bag on her back and started walking away from the beach, slowly losing track of how many waves crashed and starting to hear the sweet sound of the mysterious creatures of the night. She walks straight to Ray's house and sees the door open with him standing there. "Took you long enough to get here, Jojo." she smiled hearing her nickname, and ran, hugging him. "I could have been longer, don't push your luck. They share a laugh and go inside to chat the night away.
