Wes had being dreaming about this for months. The Enterprise's extensive database were perfect for a boy like him with the endless movies and book preserved from Earth millions of years ago. Stories of heroes and nerds like him. Wes always wanted to be a part of it, to belong to someone and be the one people wrote stories about. He finally knew how. With the help of the holodeck he could create his perfect reality.
He finishes programming the holodeck and steps inside. Wes is absorbed by a new world. Teenagers walk past him in high denim jeans and striped 80s t shirts. A school bell rings as the holodeck door vanishes behind Wes and he spots someone he recognises putting books into a locker. It's Mike Wheeler, of Stranger Things. Wesley's head races, calculating how best to approach him. He suddenly recognised how vulnerable he was here, the knowledge he'd gained from all his years in space were useless. The 80s on Earth were almost mystery to him, all the films he watched would only get him so far. He tries to remember all he has learned about Mike from the couple of hundred times he'd watched the show. Mike was kind, helpful, honest. Maybe he could just ask him to help him find his locker? Wesley repeatedly smoothens his jumper as he gets closer. He wishes he'd programmed himself to already be friends with Mike and the rest of the gang. He was the worse with introductions.
Life was strangely odd for Mike Wheeler now a monster wasn't terrorising the town and bad men weren't after him. Especially with El gone. He'd become comfortable with Eleven over that week and unquestionably he missed her. He'd been thinking about the Snowball and getting her her own bed in the basement for days before he finally told her on that last night and with that he'd become hopeful. He'd imagined a world where Will was back and Eleven would live with him forever and maybe she would even play Dungeons and Dragons with them sometimes. He thought she'd like that.
Will being back had helped though. There was nothing like having all of your best friends back together after all that time. The hours he spent with them were full of golden moments like Will sleeping over again and staying up late telling ghost stories by the torch light or Dustin challenging them to bike races and undoubtedly getting out of breath or shooting rocks at the rats in town with Lucas. Things were back to normal now but normal was different without her. The future he'd wanted with Eleven would always haunt him, he thought.
Mike notices a shadow casting over his shoulder and smiles to himself. He turns to face his friend, "Hey Will. You still cool for D & D tonight?" He asks.
But it wasn't Will. A boy a little taller than him stands inwardly, rather out of place clad in a grey jumper with a rainbow striped across.
The boy opens his mouth and mumbles something that Mike doesn't quite catch. Then he looks away awkwardly looks at Will's locker beside Mike's.
"Hi!" A bright voice says. It really is Will this time.
The other boys eyes widen again when he sees Will and he turns his back to them both.
Will steps towards him. "Hi. Your new right?" He asks.
The boy looks at him out of the corner of his eye. "Hi." He says quietly.
"I'm Will Byers. Yeah, I'm the kid in all the newspapers." Will tells him, rolling his eyes and smiling welcomingly. "This is Mike Wheeler."
"Sometimes Will lets the fame get to his head, he just needs to be put in his place everyone now and then." Mike says.
Will laughs and shakes his head and shoves Mike's arm. "I do not. What's your name?" He asks.
The boy turns to face them now, a smile creeping it's way out. "Wesley... Wesley Crusher."
"Welcome to Hawkins Middle, Wesley." Will says, not breaking eye contact with Wes.
"Have you got a locker yet?" Mike asks him.
Wes shakes his head.
"You can take the one on the other side of me if you want." Mike tells him.
The bell goes again and around them the last of the students make their way to class. Will closes Mike's locker for him.
"We'll be late for Science." Will says, hurrying off.
Mike sets off at a quick walk after him, nudging Wes to follow which he does.
"Jesus, Will! Your the most punctual student in the school I'm sure Mr Clarke's cool with being a few seconds late." Mike tells him. "Can you believe this nerd?" He asks Wes.
Wesley smiles widely at Mike and watches him, Mike, staring deeply after Will, showing a soft and delicate affection and a humour towards his friend. Mike wouldn't change Will for the world and now he had him back he didn't ever want to let go.
