Am I dead?

The sun rose above the mountains just enough for the light to illuminate the field I rested in. I rubbed my eyes with the back of my hands and yawned loudly coming to a sitting position. I gave myself nearly five minutes before I took in my surroundings and fully awoke. I seemed to be in a grassy field that laid in the middle of a great lush forest with ginormous trees that were covered in dark brown bark. The roots were monstrous and seemed to bulge against the surface of the ground in which they were imbedded in.
The area was unfamiliar to me and as if the tangled branches entwining among each other triggered my subconscious mind, I jumped to my feet. My conscious mind soon regretted the reflex as I began to fall, just barely catching myself and holding my face above the solid mass of land beneath me. A cold breeze suddenly chilled the air, the wind harshly stinging my skin and my lungs tightened in reply to the cold rush of oxygen that filled them.
Something isn't right, I thought as I tried to stand once more. This time I succeeded, only feeling a little faint as my knees shook. I looked at the forest and caught a glimpse of a shadow moving quickly across the roots that rested above the earth's crust. My hands shook violently as a sense of deja-vu swept through my memory. My body reacted in fear seeming to know more than my mind, and my feet moved, as if on their own, running in the opposite direction of the sinister shadow that seemed to be racing towards me with inhuman speed.
I ran as fast as I could towards the forest in front of me. I ran for what seemed like fifteen minutes before I realized I hadn't moved from my spot at all. I was in the same place as when I first began to run. I gave up, breathing heavily. I turned around fearfully, with my eyes closed because I knew that the shadow should have reach me by now. I opened my eyes hesitantly...
In front of me there was...

Nothing. I seemed to be completely alone. The shadow nowhere in sight.
"Boo." A voice whispered quietly from behind me making my hair stand on end. I turned around in a haste coming face to face with a monster only brought to life in my childhood nightmares. It seemed this was the case no longer. I froze in place.
Black eyes looked straight through me and with its tongue it hissed. It had horns atop it's head, but other than those three atrocious characteristics...
I could almost see a man.
That was, before it grabbed my throat and I lost consciousness.
