When the world was new, long before the first signs of life developing on the burning earth and bacteria developed in the boiling waters, there were gods. But they were not the gods we know about today, with form and righteous power, they were a force, energy, creating and destroying everything in their path with no rhyme or reason to control them. But before long, they developed a consciousness; they started to calm their energy, and they were able to see everything around them, the slowly moving and developing life, the cooling earth and waters, even the thickening atmosphere. When the first creatures began to roam the planet alongside them, they took on their shape, began communicating with other gods, ones they just thought were just some part of them they didn't know about. Maybe the other gods were simply just branches of each other after hundreds of thousands of years of splintering and regenerating.
Then as the world began changing into the planet we know today, so did the gods. They took up regions to themselves, created boundaries, and though most did have animalistic forms, others, the more powerful gods, took on monstrous forms. Then, hundreds of millennia later, the first signs of humans began to show up. The gods grew wary of these new beings; they were intelligent, more so then anything else they had seen before. But they lacked power, both physical and magickal, so the gods did not fear them, and they thought that these creatures would eventually die out like everything else did, and maybe they would.
But the gods noticed that their time had begun to slow, not that the earth was not moving as fast as it used too, but as the humans grew and developed, an awareness came upon the gods. They started listening to how the humans talked, how they took on each other, and they mimicked them. The gods, like they have done many times before, took on these creatures forms, and they liked them.
And as the gods became, in lack of better words, domesticated, the humans became aware of their influence on the world around them and started myths and legends. The gods liked many of the stories, and began to perform them, like they were acting out a play. Their wild powers turning into a focused force of energy, taking on these human's ideas of who they are and all of them were ignorant to it, well not all of them were ignorant.
Wars broke out between the domesticated gods and the still wild irrepressible gods, dangerous wars, so dangerous it almost destroyed the planet a thousand times. The humans never noticed, they were too busy fighting their own wars. Then just when everything seemed to be at a climax, the gods vanished from this world.
But that did not mean they all died, or simply left the world to its own accord, no, they feared the world would die without them there, but they also feared the world would die with them there as well. The gods, in the midst of their final war, discovered something. A realm that was parallel to our own, but different, much more vast, and thousands of times more beautiful. Many would eventually call it heaven, others called it Asgard, and even to some knew it was Olympus. All were true in the basic definition, a realm for the gods.
The portal to this realm, known to the gods as 'The Gates of Heaven', is an ancient tree, Yggdrasil. The gods do not know where it came from, but the basic knowledge of it is that it was there as long, or even longer, then the Gods themselves.
Still, the gods feared the world would crumble without their presence, so they only stayed in their paradise for a few years at a time, but every time they passed through the Gates, the more they longed to stay in their beautiful oasis. Then one of the Goddesses, Ceridwen, had an idea.
She called all of the gods who cared to her temple within the realm, and told them her plan. They were going to make a human, but not just any human, a human that can manipulate the world around them in an almost godly manner. At first the gods were skeptical, they have seen what a demigods power could do to the world, and they feared that this human may be even more powerful then the demigods. But Ceridwen described to them that they would create only five of these creatures. Espers, Guardians of the Gates, replacements to make sure that the sun and moon still coexisted and that the rain and tides would act as they should.

Science FictionThis is just an origin story for a possible novel idea. I make a lot of these as origin and mythology is my favourite part of any book or tv series.
