Rue!" The scream rips from my lungs. All the trees around me are a blur as I run through the vast wilderness. The only thought going through my mind being that I need to get to Rue. I need to get to Rue. I need to get to Rue.

I make it. Right there in the clearing is Rue waiting for me, but out of the corner of my eye I spot one of the careers hiding in the bushes. Before I can warn her, his spear goes flying.

Then, out of nowhere, a familiar face appears. His strong, well built body and dirty blond hair nothing but a messy blur as he flies through the air. Hollering, he shouts, "I got it!"

Well, he wouldn't be wrong. He did catch it...in his stomach.

"Oh shit." he keels over onto his hands and knees, the spear jutting out from his abdomen. Before I can completely react emotionally, I pull out my bow and arrow faster than might seem possible. I aim at the career before he can flee, and let the arrow fly. I don't even look to see where it hits, his scream and a cannon sounding off is enough confirmation for me.

"Peeta! You saved Rue! You sacrificed yourself!" I gush, covering my mouth with my hand. Rue kneels next to him and helps him lay down on his back, tears misting in her eyes.

"I meant...to catch...it." he grunts.

"Welp. Bye. Thanks for saving her." I shrug.

"Wait, Katniss!" Peeta cries out, limply reaching out into thin air. "Before I die...I want you to know something." he coughs, blood staining his shirt.

"What is it?" I ask innocently.

"I...I love you. Not just as a charade for these stupid games. I've loved you ever since I can remember. I watched you walk home every day after school and...Katniss, what are you doing?" he watches me as I pull back my bow string, the arrow aimed and ready. "No! Stop!" he cries as he realizes what I am about to do.

The arrow wedges itself into his brain, and Peeta crumples over backwards within seconds, a look of horror forever implanted onto his face.

"Katniss?!" Rue exclaims, gasping.

"I had to do it. I put him out of his misery. Plus, it creeps me out when boys have crushes on me." I shudder, walking towards Peeta and pulling the arrow out of his skull.

Putting the now blood covered arrow back with the rest, Rue and I head forward on our journey through the woods. We stop for the night, both exhausted from our big day's work. Rue, looking at me a bit worried, begins to open her mouth, but closes it again

Rolling my eyes, I don't even try to hide my annoyance, "What is it?"

"Um," she hesitates, "You killed Peeta."

"Well, about that..." I start, but Rue cuts me off.

"Thank god, now there is one less person for us to worry about. I was afraid you'd betray me for him. Now I know we'll always have each other's backs!" she smiles gleefully and hugs me tight.
