Ella Maguire was running.
After storming out of the taxi that drove her to the airport, she rushed in the enormous building even though she had no idea where she was heading to.
She kept running into people who were hugging and sheding tears of joy as they reunited with their loved ones, stressed out employees who waited for their flight while clutching on their briefcases and excited university students who held onto their Erasmus applications like dear life.
The sound her heeled ankle boots produced, blended in the horrendous noise that lingered above her head. She furiously scrutinized the place, clenching her fists at her sides and tried to breathe steadily.
She looked at the section of Departures on the flight board and searched for "London". When she noticed it she raced off to the front desk.
"Give me a ticket to anywhere, just give me a ticket," she shouted ignoring the terrified look the woman behind the bench gave her.
She quickly fished for her wallet, handed the lady a note and left for the gates.
She had to find him before he embarked. She had to talk to him. She had to stop him.
The last passenger handed their passport to the lady behind the bench and her heart almost stopped. She pushed herself to go faster.
"Can you please get a passenger of this flight? It's an emergency. I have to find him, please," she breathed out, hoping that her words sounded clear and cohesive.
"No, miss. The flight is about to depart," the lady replied giving her a look of sympathy.
"I'm begging you. This is very important. It will only take a minute, I promise. Please."
"I'm sorry."
She took a few steps back and collapsed behind the glass that surrounded the waiting room as she watched the plane roll across the airfield. Only then, did she allow the tears she had been holding back to roll down her flashed face.
He was gone.
She shoved the ticked that granted her access to the gate in the pocket of her beige jacket. She was not going to use it, anyway.
Her cellphone went off and the caller ID formed the name of her best friend.
"Did you make it on time?" her voice urged from the other side of the line.
"Almost," Ella muttered and her voice cracked.
"What do you mean almost?"
"I almost made it."
