In the name of Allah the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful.
Peace and Blessings of Almighty Allah(ﷻ), be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his blessed descendants and his noble companions.
السلام عليكم ورحمةالله وبركاته○
Before starting this series we need to question ourselves:
●'Why should we know Allah and His names'?
• The answer is simple. Knowledge of the Names of Allah is the basis for all other knowledge. Knowing Allah will help us in loving Allah better, it will help us in accepting the divine decree and be content no matter what situation we are in.
• Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
"Knowledge of the Most Beautiful Names of Allah is the basis of all other kinds of knowledge, for all of these other branches of knowledge are devoted to either a command or a creation of His."
([Badaa'i' al-Fawaa'id (1/163)].
●Now let's come to the memorizing part.
•Abu Hurayra (radiAllahu 'anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said,
"Allah has ninety-nine names; whoever memorizes them will enter Paradise."
Sahih Muslim.
●Does that mean just memorize the list of Names and you will enter Jannah?
• "Ihsa" or "Ahsaha" which is mentioned in the hadith means not only to memorize, but it has a deeper meaning:
○ Memorize it.
○Understand and acknowledge it.
○Ask Allah with these names.
○Praise Allah with these names.
○Believe with certainty that they are Allah's names.
○Contemplate, and act according to them!
•Inherent in the reward for memorizing the Names of Allah is living by them.
This is what people forget when they teach their children (and themselves) how to memorize the 'list'. So it becomes a 'poem' or a 'song' and more of a ritual than a spiritual journey.
●A few more important questions:
●How can we understand the Qur'an if we don't know the One Who revealed the Qur'an?
●How can we develop our relationship with Allah, if we don't know Him enough?
●How can we love Him and feel awe for His greatness if we don't know His attributes?
