Again, this is a warning. There is mention of death/killing, shooting, stabbing, weapons, etc throughout this book. But nothing goes into graphic detail. You have been warned.

Chapter 1:

My mother drives into the new town we'll be living in. I continue to stare out the window after a sign welcomes us to Ashbourne. So far, there is no sign of civilization, only trees. Music blares into my right ear while my mom's constant chatter fills the left. She keeps going on about starting a new life in a new place. I try to block out her words and listen to the music, already wishing to arrive at our new house. I notice the trees starting to thin, see more sunlight streaming down onto the ground. I perk up when I see a building up ahead on my right. The building has a brick exterior and grand steps leading to a big oak door. A sign soon opens up by the building, informing me that we're passing Grand Oak Library. I look forward and see the small, grimy windshield up ahead. My mom puts on her blinker and pulls into the parking lot, pulling up to a gas pump. I glance at the dashboard that reads that we are almost out of gas.

"Why don't you go in and grab some snacks and pop. I won't be able to get groceries tonight after unloading the truck. I'll pay at the pump with my card while you go inside," my mom tells me, handing me a twenty dollar bill before climbing out of the car.

I hoist myself out of the car and walk towards the grimy building. My eyes take in the muddy sidewalk and dirty windows that look like they haven't been washed in at least three years. I approach the matching dirty door and tug on the handle. It gives only a little bit. I get a better grip and tug with all my strength and the door flies open. I step inside and see aisles of store goods to my right, beverage fridges on the back wall, and a checkout counter to my left. I head towards the back wall to grab a couple of pops. I glance down each aisle as I pass, trying to locate some chips. I get to the fridge and look through the selections they offer. I grab a bottle of Coca-Cola for myself and a bottle of Pepsi for my mom. I turn around and head down an aisle, hoping to find some chips. After two aisles I find a small selection containing what I'm in search of. I grab a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos and a bag of Funyuns. I start towards the cash register and look around for an employee. I've spotted no one by the time I reach the counter. I place my items down and glance around again. I hear shuffling and look towards the back of the store.

"Excuse me, I'm ready to check out my items," I call out, hoping there is somebody in the back.

"I'll be there soon," replies a deep voice, clearly male.

I turn around to look out the window and see my mom finishing up at the gas pump. I look back towards the back of the store and see a shadow moving against the wall. A few seconds later a man comes out from the hallway in the back. I study him as he gets closer. He has light brown, almost blonde hair. He has a strong jawline, and full lips. His height appears to be about six feet, and he has the body of an athlete. Once he reaches the counter I notice his eyes are a beautiful blue, hinting towards a little gray. He gets behind the counter and starts scanning the items.

"Are you new here?" He asks, startling me from my staring.

"Why do you think that?" I ask defiantly, looking into his face confidently.

"I haven't seen you around here before. Which means you're new to town, or you never left your house in ten years," he replies, a small, lopsided smile on his face.

"I'm new here, literally just arrived here five minutes ago," I reply, a smile of my own forming on my lips.

"Your total is $10.52," he informs me as I pull out the twenty dollar bill from my pocket.
