Chapter 14: Bertha's Conflict

CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Bertha's Conflict

Tahimik na binuksan ni Hilda ang bintana. "We can't see it here. But, if we fly in the sky, it's possible."

Napakunot ang noo ko. "How?"

Lumaki ang ngiti niya. "Witch po ako, Ate Yelena." Tumakbo siya sa closet niya at tinulak ito gamit ang buong lakas niya. May kinuha siya sa likod at bumungad ang broom na hawak-hawak niya. Inilagay niya ang kanyang hintuturo sa kanyang labi at dumungaw sa bintana. Sinenyasan niya akong lumapit.

She glided her right hand downwards and whispered something. Then, a little portion of the ground turned soft and bouncy like it became a trampoline.

Tumalon siya sa bintana at nag-land doon at sumunod naman ako sa kanya.

She mounted on her broom and made herself steady in her current position. Lumingon siya sa akin at ngumiti. The gap between her teeth showing. "Tara, Ate Yelena. Paalala lang po, medyo mabilis ang broom."

She went forward, leaving spaces behind her as I mounted myself on the broom as well.

"Ready?"

Hilda's grip on her broom grew more tighter and at last, we flew up. Napakabilis ng paglipad na parang wala akong makita na kahit ano at naririnig ko ang excitement na sigaw ni Hilda. My jaw clenched tighter and my hair covered my entire face as it flew freely.

Tumigil sa paggalaw ang broom. Before I knew it, the whole view of Bertha City can be seen. It was quite dark, but there were still a few lights that look like fireflies. We were several meters up high from the ground.

White dots that looked like pebbles garnered my attention. From below, they look like stars that lit up the sky. But, from above, you could see the dots formed a large magic circle conquering the skies of Bertha City.

"Do you think it has a connection with the city's current situation?" tanong ko kay Hilda.

I could only see her back as she's ahead of me. So, I couldn't see her expression. "Opo. Other officials refused to help us because we're an independent city and we don't really belong to any country. Kabilang ang Bertha City sa lupain ng Enchant Academy at walang magagawa ang Headmistress niyo para tulungan kami."

"Why didn't you tell the adults about this?"

"No one believes a 10-year-old girl. They won't take me seriously, saying it's only imaginary. So, I went searching for myself." Nagkaroon ng panandaliang katahimikan. "I lost my father because of this. I want to make him proud. He's watching me in Avaloria."

"Avaloria?"

"Doon po napupunta ang mga mabubuting kaluluwa, ate. Pagkailangan na nilang magpaalam, do'n na sila mananatili, pero ginagabayan pa rin po nila ang mga mahal nila sa buhay. Parang kagaya mo ng 'heaven' sa Mortalis po, Ate," sagot niya.
