Flashing Lights

Squeak, squeak, squeak.

Every step I took forward was agony.

Just about every eye in the country is on me. The podium I was to stand on looked miles away even though it was only a few steps ahead. Everyone in America was about to judge my entire existence over a single number.

"I knew I shouldn't have worn this today. How could you have known? It's selected randomly daily." I thought to myself.  My  brown hair sat on the sides of my head in two buns. I had an old pair of worn converse on and a light blue t-shirt. What will they think about that? Even though my clothes were plain I felt extremely uncomfortable in my outfit.

As I reached the steps I took the four most agonizingly slow steps I could manage. I finally reached the top and hesitantly turned.

So many cameras flashed all at once I had to shield my eyes. I searched the crowd for any familiar face but only found a sea of strangers and more lights and flashes. Where was Collin or mom?

I spotted a jumbotron with my entire 5 ft. 5in. frame on it next to a box with my face in it. My skin was so pale and my blue eyes held so much fear. My name and age was listed above the pictures of me.  Jamie C. Widick, age: 17

I waited to see the score that could ruin my life forever. I shut my eyes and took deep breathes trying to calm myself down. My heart rate sped thinking about all the eyes on me. I'm the girl who can barely handle being the center of attention in a group of three people.

There was a click on the screen and then gasps filled my ears. I've failed. That's it. They're going to kill me. I let out a slow breath and my lip quivered.

Reluctantly I opened my eyes and looked up at the now blue screen with a giant white number plastered across it.
