In Which She Gets Fired Up Twice

"There's a fucking fire!" I shout.

Meanwhile I'm struggling in the kitchen, my older sister Marcy has her eyes glued on the TV paying no attention to what's happening around her. So I decide to yell again, and this time much louder. "I fucking burned the pancakes! I could really use some help here!"

From the kitchen I can see her entirely. Swiftly, she turns around with a grim look on her face and shushing me, completely disregarding the smoking pan that's in flames in my hands. Somehow, I managed to burn the pancakes and I have absolutely no idea how. I navigate the pan over to the sink and hastily throw it inside, twisting open the cold water and watching the smoke increase by a thousand. "Dammit!" I sneer.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

With everything happening grow twice as worse, Marcy is still focused on the TV. What the hell could she be watching right now? I groan as I take my right shoe off and slam it against the fire detector repeatedly in hopes to get it to shut up. I'm too tiny to reach for the batteries with my hands and getting a stool would waste time. Someway, I end up doing the worst thing possible because the whole thing comes off and slams against my face. "Fucking hell, ow!"

"Can you be any louder?" Marcy complains. "I'm watching the news, shush!"

"Yeah? Well I was trying to stop our apartment from bursting into flames." I shoot back, tossing the detector onto the kitchen counter. I walk over to Marcy to find out what could have her so absorbed while rubbing my aching nose.

And not shockingly enough, another murder report.

"Another murder has happened in Brooksville and we can only suspect one person. The serial killer on the loose known as The Ripper. Evident shows the victim's throat has been slashed, just like the others. Right here you can see the scene—the body is covered right now but as you can see right over there, the paramedics are wheeling the body who was identified as Jolene Wright into an ambulance..." Now I see why she was so focused.

There have been about four murders in the last month or so, and each murder is the same. A woman with a slashed throat and it is believed that serial killer is on the loose. They've even given him a mysterious, and frightening name. The Ripper.

I fear going out because of this, and occasionally when I do I make sure I have my maze in my bag and a pocket knife. It's come down to that.

People have been suspecting that it's this guy named Sade Rios because he doesn't talk to anyone, and to everyone in town he's a whole mystery. Even the people who've known of him the longest in town don't know anything about him. Like where he came from, who he knows, his family, his background... People only know his name because he's been blasted everywhere by investigators who suspect he has something to do with the murders. They put his whole profile out on the line. But he doesn't do anything about it, and people mostly judge him because of his tattoos which cover his entire body and his bad guy demeanor.

Personally, I don't think it's him. He might look scary and frightening, but it's been said to never a judge a book by its cover. If he has anything to do with The Ripper I think he'd be too scared to stay in town since everyone suspects it's him. He'd be worried of cops and investigators ramming into his place and finding evidence. But since he has nothing to be afraid of, because he isn't The Ripper, he stays. He doesn't look affected when people side eye him, or move away from him. He doesn't seem worried, or hurt when the whispers start.
