Why Buying My Phone Sucked

Once upon a very real time, in a land very close to yours, and in the galaxy you live in, lived a young girl about 9 years old who constantly begged her parents for a phone. Little did she know that as years passed she would grow to hate the thought of getting a phone.

8 years later

"Emily I can't let you fly to New Mexico without having a way to contact you." My over barring father ranted again. "You have to buy a phone."

"But I don't want a phone!" I complained for what seemed like the millionth time. I understood why my parents wanted me to have a phone, but I also knew that I would have to pay for it if I got one. My friends gave me heck for not having one, but honestly my iPod, even with how old it is, works just fine for what I need.

"You need one, we aren't having this conversation again go get ready to go. We are heading to Best Buy." My father stated.

I didn't say anything back I new it was pointless to fight anymore. I had put it off for so long, but now with my leaving on Saturday for a summer camp in New Mexico I was finally going to have to spend my hard earned money on a phone.

I slowly got ready to go not in any hurry to spend my money on something I didn't think I needed/wanted. Until eventually I couldn't procrastinate any longer. I got into the car and tired to think of a way to get out of having to get a phone. I know I should just give in, but I didn't need one. It was going to be fine and my parents needed to see that. But uncomfortably even after having nothing to do for 30 minuets while we drove to Best Buy I still couldn't come up with a reason to get out of getting a phone.

"Welcome to Best Buy!" The nice young man at the entrance welcomed us as we walked into the store.

I smiled politely and followed my parents over to the phones. I shook my head as I looked at prices. I smiled when I was the cheapest, and realized that it was only 19$. Call me cheep all you want, but I am not spending 100$ on a phone I don't even want.

I looked at my dad hopping he was looking at the same one I was. Unfortunately he wasn't. He was asking questions to a employee about a 75$ phone. I shook my head. No way.

Smiling to myself I watched as my dad wasted his time asking questions about a phone I was not going to get. That might have been rude of me, but I mean it would have also been rude to interrupt them and say "Hey guys hate to break it to ya, but I am not buying that phone."

I think my way turned out to be the better way. My dad finished up talking to the guy than looked at the data plan cards.

"Hmmm." He said stroking his short black and gray beard. "the prices for the data plans have gone up sense we last bought a phone like this."

I nodded not liking the thought.

"Lets go to Walmart and look at the straight-talk prices." He suggested and I nodded happy that there was a chance to get something cheaper.

"I think this 75$ phone is your best bet. My father said looking happy he found the "perfect" smart phone for me. Which happened to be the same 57$ phone that was at Best Buy.

"Uhh." I started not sure how to tell him I wanted the 19$ flip phone.

"Hey what about this phone? She is only going to use it for a week." Mom said and as I braced myself to see what phone she was pointing at I almost squealed in delight she was pointing at a 16$ phone.

Dad didn't look to happy but he opened the box and started reading inside to see what kind of stats it had on it.

"Its not on Verizon." He said finally and my heart sank. No other net work would reach my house.

My pointed at the 19$ phone I had been looking at earlier and dad went through his same processes of reading every detail about the phone only to look up and again say.

"It isn't on Verizon."

I sighed and pointed at the 20$ smart phone. I mean it was only a dollar more. "What about this one."

After what seemed like forever he looked up and said. "This works. You sure you don't want the 75$ phone though? It would be better in the long run."

"No dad, I only need it for a week."

He shrugged looking like I was the strangest person he has ever seen. "Its your money."

I smiled happily until I saw the data plan was 45$ a month. Sure it gave me unlimited everything. But still 45$ I could have spent on food. Gah this phone was going to be the death of me.

I sighed and went to check out and paid for my new phone. I tired to be excited thinking about texting my friends, but the only thing I could think of was how much ice cream I could have bought with that money.
