THE OCEAN is beautiful. 50 years ago, it gave me everything I didn't think I could have - power, immortality, and impossible beauty. A family that really loved me. In return, I had to give her my love and devotion. I had to kill for her.

That was a small price to pay.

I was chosen by the Ocean herself at a special ceremony called the Selection. I leapt into her waves willingly and never looked back.

As soon as my skin touched the water, there was an immediate change. My dirty blond hair became long, light, and wavy, and it was the color of pale gold. My skin was smooth, flawless, and fair. My eyes were crystal blue, and my voice was like chiming bells. Even my smell was beautiful, a combination of lavender and tropical fruit. Everything about me was lovely and sweet... until I went in for the kill.

I had a heart once. I was kind, loving, and generous. I thought that if you had a good heart, good things would happen to you. Silly Avaldonian ideals. Now, I know better. Now, my heart is made of ice, and I am better off for it.

My name is Meredith Kaleb, and I am 67 years old to the day.
