In The Shadows- Birthday Wishes

Alexandria's POV-
Have you ever wanted to know what lurks in the shadows when nobody is around? Well I am here to tell you the story about how I found out what lurked in the shadows. It was a really cold day in December, when I got the first glimpse into the shadows.
"Damn it's cold out here. Why did we choose to walk to get coffee? I could have driven." I ask Kat.
Kat and I are coffee addicts. I think that is why we get along sometimes.
"Because. Walking is part of the experience." She explains.
"If freezing my butt off is part of the experience I don't want to experience anything." I say as we walk to The Brew. It is only a fifteen minute walk from my house to there but we are in Michigan. If you are unfamiliar with the weather of Michigan, consider yourself lucky. In the winter one day it will be really warm and then the next day you won't even be able to stand outside without getting frost bite. It is an in-between day where it is okay but you still don't want to be outside for too long.
I didn't want to come here. I wanted to stay at home and just make coffee myself but no. Kat just had to have her special crap. I don't understand her sometimes. She literally drug me out of the house so that we could go get coffee. I asked her why she couldn't just go get it herself, but she went on a rant on how she could get kidnapped.
When we got to the coffee shop we put in our usual order and waited for it to brew.
"Order for Collins." Said the barista. I went up and got the coffee and went back to the table where Kat sat on her phone. We just talked for about an hour and decided that we were going to go home. I got up to pay for our drinks and was immediately pushed back down by Kat.
"It is your birthday. I got this." She said. Well then free coffee for me.

As we begin to walk home and the house comes into view, I see multiple cars sitting out front. Oh god, they just had to go and do exactly what I didn't want them to do.

I walk into the house and was yelled at by all of my friends and family.

"Surprise!!!" They all yelled. Even though I am glad that they are all here, I am really not in the mood to entertain people all night. It isn't the most fun thing to do when you are still partly frozen. I look down at what I am wearing and start to feel embarrassed. I am wearing old leggings, and a well worn My Chemical Romance hoodie.

"I am just going to go change my clothes." I say. Racing up the stairs I try not to fall while thinking about what I was going to wear. I decide on a sweater with what looks like rain drops on it, a pair of black ripped skinny jeans, and a pair of black Converse.
I run down the stairs as fast as I could and start greeting people. As soon as I am done greeting people my mom comes over to me.
"We are going to get started on the cake." She says leading me to the dining room.
We get there and all of my family and friends are sitting at or around the table. There is a cake and a pile of gifts. I only wanted one thing for the past three years and that is a camera.
I sit down at the table and everybody begins to sing happy birthday. My friends James, Gerard, and Kat are singing to loudest. When they are finished singing I feel silly string all over me. I should have known. It is a tradition to do something to you on your birthday in our family. I look at the cake and it says "HAPPY 16th B-DAY DRIA!!"
We cut the cake and begin to eat. Mom announces that we are going to start opening gifts. I get through all of them and no camera. A lot of band merch and makeup, which I appreciate but I was just really hoping for a camera. When the party is done I drag my friends up the stairs since they are staying the night. When we all get to my room we sit on my bed and begin talking.
" We know you didn't get what you wanted this year. So we decided to get something to make up for that." James says. James is my ultimate crush. He has electric blue eyes and jet black hair. He was extremely tall compared to my 5'2".
They pull out a huge box from my closet and I wondered how they got it there. They set it in front of me, and all began watching me intently. I opened the box and a monkey popped out! Nah just kidding. I pulled out a camera. An expensive camera.
"What the hell guys. You didn't have to do this. This must have cost a fortune!" I said
"It was but we all chipped in to pay for it. Now we want to see your magic." Gerard says.
"Okay...." I walk over to the window where I have flowers. I take a picture where the light is just right and I begin to mess with the image. I showed them and they all looked stunned.
"Wow. I had no clue that you were so good at this." Kat says.
"Well thanks." I say.
We sit and talk for a little while and Gerard and Kat leave. now it is just me and James.
"So are you happy with what got this year?" He asked.
"Yeah. I got one of the single most important things in my life, and I got to spend time with my family and friends. It was pretty great." I say.
"Well, I'm glad that you had a good time. I should get going." I walk him to the door and watched as he drove away. This night couldn't have gone better. As I walk out of the bathroom and to my bed, I see a shadow going across the room. I shrug it off as a car going by and feel myself falling into a deep sleep.
