Josh's POV [a/n: in this AU, josh and tyler are twenty øne]
THE SOFT AND WARM CALIFORNIA air seemed strong and more breathable, rather than the plane's contaminated smog filled atmosphere. My heart fluttered, nostalgia racing in my mind as the taxi driver turned up the volume on the radio. I smiled at the song, quietly humming along to the tune, careful not to let Tyler hear. "California, knows how to party..." the rap filled my mind, and the song came to an end when we reached my parents' house. I grabbed my luggage from the trunk and looked at my childhood home.
I scanned the neighbourhood; looking to see what I had missed out on in the past couple of years. My heart stopped when my eyes scanned an all too familiar house. The image of a certain blonde girl came into mind, but my train of thought was interrupted by the chorus of one of our songs, but a female voice singing along to it. I tried to recognise it, but I was busy thinking of all the memories that invaded my mind, and time seemed all to fast to catch up to. The driver honked at me to shut the trunk, and I obeyed. Guilt welled up in my stomach and tied a knot as the girl who I hadn't seen for too long was peering at me from a window across the well kept grass lawn.
A shocked look plastered on her face as she scrambled to get outside, the door opening and everything changed to slow motion, my eyes not seeming to focus on anything other than the girl who was running, no, sprinting over to me like her life depended on it, and I couldn't stop thinking about how I forgot about her. "Josh?!" she exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around my waist, I immediately hugged her back, ignoring all the confusing looks Tyler sent to me. 'A fan?' he mouthed. I shook my head and turned back to Gray.
"You've dyed your hair! I'm actually surprise I didn't notice! I'm a fan of your music, you too Tyler, but I haven't been on social media lately, so I haven't seen your yellow hair yet, but I guess that's like the music industry, everything goes by fast." her words came out a mile a minute, but everything still was going by so slow, nothing seemed to be sinking in.
"Whoa, whoa, Grayson," I began, chuckling at her eagerness to talk, not like I could blame her. "Slow down, I need to understand you to have a proper conversation."
She rolled her eyes, the smile she had never leaving her lips. "I see you haven't lost your sense of witty humour." I pretended to pout, a smile fighting my faux glares I shot towards her. She hugged me once again, and what felt like an electric shock surged through my body. A blush fought its way to my cheeks, and I couldn't help but remember what happened the last time we saw each other...when we said goodbye.
I let go of Gray's body with one of my hands, dragging it across my lips, my arm tingled, longing for her touch. My minds words shocked me, was this the feeling that I got after seeing a person that I hadn't seen in awhile? I wanted to say that was the case, but a slight increase in heartbeat told me it was something else.
And, for once, my mind wasn't clouded with nervousness for our next show, or any upcoming photo shoots, it was just pure happiness. It was an emotion my body had been drained out of these past few days. My life had just become a blur of screaming and the constant thump of a drum. It was nice when I started, and I still will never stop loving our fans, but everything gets old after awhile. My drums used to always have a melodic sound that harmonised with Tyler's voice and his piano, but these few days while I was on tour, the sound of the drum became dull and empty- a loud and obnoxious noise that had no meaning except an unruly sound that came out of it whenever I hit it. That noise and the constant screaming the fans did made my ears ring, even the mornings after our concerts. Before this tour, I would always cherish that sound; it was a noise that reminded me of memories I made the night prior, but now it had just became an annoying ringing that I'd be stuck with.
Grayson had cleared my mind, but I still couldn't get over the fact that I forgot about her.
