I began to drive back to my hometown. Lately, people have been getting sick and turning into cannibals. Communications went down just last week. I needed to get home; I needed to check on my family.

I looked over to see the white mailbox, Greene written on the side. Something Maggie and I decided we wanted to do years earlier. I pulled into the driveway and parked my car. I got out and opened the fence that was surrounding the property. I walked back to my black jeep and pulled into the place I grew up in. I again, got out out of the car to shut the gates. With everyone acting out I felt it was safest to keep them shut.

I got into my car yet again and pulled into the property. I looked at the white farm house and smiled when I saw my little sister Maggie sitting on the front porch. She ran off the porch and over to my car once she saw me. I parked my jeep under a small tree beside the house. The moment I got out my little sister jumped into my arms.

I fell back, not expecting the force of her hitting my side. I quickly caught my balance and wrapped my arms around her small frame.

"I was starting to worry you weren't coming." Maggie spoke, her head resting against my chest. I pulled away from the embrace and looked at my little sister.

"I'd never leave you behind." I told her. Tears started streaming down her tan face. "Hey." I spoke as I wiped the warm tear off her cheek. "It's okay. I'm here now." I told her.

"Shawn and Annette, they're in the barn." Maggie said, tears streaming faster down her face. I again wiped them away.

"It's okay Maggie. We can just go get them." I said, a smile clear on my face. Maggie shook her head and looked up at me.

"They're dead Venus." I looked down at my sister confusion written on my face.

"What happened?" I asked, my voice cracking slightly.

"They were bit last night." She said as tears streamed faster and faster from her green eyes.

"Oh Maggie they aren't dead. They're just sick." I said laughing slightly at the girls foolishness. She looked up at me and rubbed the tears from her eyes.

"They are?" She asked. I laughed and nodded.

"Haven't you been watching the news? I mean, at least before the cable went out?"

"No." I stoked her hair and pulled her back into an embrace a smile stayed on my face, knowing everything was going to be okay.

"They're working on a cure Maggs I give it a month tops." She nodded while still in my arms.

If only I knew how foolish it was to have hope. How foolish it was to believe that my step brother and step mom would be okay. Welcome to the apocalypse. Who knew my life would start now?
