Fireflies In My Head

At night

I return to my bed again

Very late

My phone’s light is all I can see

In a pitch black room

My curtains aren’t pulled down

If I turn my head I can see

Outside

There is nothing

It’s dark as well

Eventually my eyes and soul grow tired

Of watching my screen

I roll around and look up at the ceiling

Slowly it comes into my sight

And the dark becomes less dark

I am so used to it.

It’s relieving but sad too.

But I can sit and watch

The fireflies in my head.

The little spurts of energy

Of light

That exist for one perfect moment

Then after that

Nevermore.

Ideas

Thoughts

I will sleep,

Wake up,

And never remember them

Those little fireflies in my head.

The happy moments

I will forget

But I will never forget the dark

It lingers past every burst

Of hopeful light.

Nevertheless,

Every night I lie,

And watch the fireflies in my head.

And how they disintegrate

Before I can catch them

But they relax me into sleep

They keep me alive in this dark room.

I thank them.
