*SOV Language
Korean is classified as an SOV language, which stands for Subject-Object-Verb word order.
*Basic Sentence Formation
(Subject/Topic+particle) + (Object+particle) + (Verb/Adjective+conjugation)
*Position of Nouns
Korean nouns appear in a sentence in one of the following ways:
(1) by itself
(2) before particles
(3) before another noun, and
(4) before copula.
Example:
"선생님, 수잔이 미국 대학생이예요."
"Teacher, Susan is an American college student."
[Notice that 선생님 "teacher" appears by itself; 수잔 "Susan" appears with the objective particle, 이; 미국 "America" appears before another noun 대학생 "college student", appears before 이예요 "copula".]
*Noun usage with Verbs
Examples:
"나타샤가 농구를 놀아요" Natsha plays basketball. (X)
"나타샤가 농구를 해요" Natasha plays basketball. (O)
[The verb 놀아요 literally means "play" and 해요 means "do". However, in Korean, the noun 농구 "basketball" does not collocate with 놀아요, but with 해요. For playing musical instrument such as piano and guitar, a different verb 쳐요 "play" or "hit" is used instead of 해요 or 놀아요.]
Example:
"나타샤가 피아노를 놀아요" Natasha plays piano. (X)
"나타샤가 피아노를 해요" Natasha plays piano. (X)
"나타샤가 피아노를 쳐요." Natasha plays piano. (O)
