How to Present Your Book and Characters

A rather crucial part of writing here on Wattpad is having readers. So having a decent cover, story description, and title goes a long way.

Example: my headcanon book started in the days of old, when I sucked even impossibly more at covers, and just picked a random nerd-related, unedited screen shot of Mewbacca the Wookie Cat to represent my writing.

Just a few weeks ago, I decided that my readers probably didn't want to know that my phone was at 70% and charging if they considered reading my book

Just a few weeks ago, I decided that my readers probably didn't want to know that my phone was at 70% and charging if they considered reading my book. I still wanted my favorite Wookie Cat though, so I just gave it an update and it worked a few miracles. It's readable now!

What I don't want to see, however, is a cover with the main characters standing dramatically

What I don't want to see, however, is a cover with the main characters standing dramatically. Is your book about people standing around in dramatic poses? No? I didn't think so! There are other things! At least incorporate something plot-related into your book. It reassures me that there actually is a plot, an extremely important part of a book to have.

Like I said, the cover isn't the only important part of presenting your book. Generic titles drive me mad. Loki's Child, Iron Man's Sister and In Love With Thor are generic, and it's tragic that your main character appears to be nothing more than a relative of a famous person or someone who makes googly eyes at Chris Hemsworth('s abs).

Reader need to know the book they may read has more depth than that. Try your best to make it clear to us, or find someone who does covers to make it clear. (Shout out to Stars_Alight for my amazing new cover on this book! It looks epic, doesn't it?)

'Umm... the title says it all, right? haha, Im horrible at descriptions oops. GO READ THIS BOOK!!!!!1!!!111'

Umm... No thanks. I'll never know anything about Loki's kid, because the author of this cliché book decided not to take advantage of an opportunity to gain readers, and there's no way I'm going to start the first chapter to see what went down. Try describing WHY/WHO/WHEN Loki had a kid instead. Again, don't main characters have other interesting things happen to them? Use that to pull me in.

⬆ This is also a terrible way to get people to read your works

⬆ This is also a terrible way to get people to read your works. But it does work. I did start that book. And I'm only a little ashamed (generally, you don't want your disclaimers to be the most attractive part of your description).

One last thing- names. Example: Crys, short for Crystal. Why are so many names "unique" to the point of weird?! Why do they always need nicknames?!

You will meet more Bobs and Janes than you will Cryses. Come on people. Get it together and then maybe I'll read your book.
