Order.
Order resulted in success.
Success resulted in prosperity.
There was no room for individuality.
That is what he was taught in his learning facility. To be like everyone else, things would run smoothly. To be an individual, millions would be at risk. To be individual was selfish, for you were putting yourself before others. That is what they taught. No, preached. Preached loud enough for all to hear, but not loud enough to become individual. Just orderly.
Mihal did not agree, but in Gedway, you had to make everyone believe that you agreed, or else you would become a criminal and break the Orderly Laws. Mihal just put on a smile and went about like every other. His black hair was styled like everyone else's, being slicked back with no strand out of place. His sharp ears were enclosed in a silver device that looked like an ear, but acted differently. Yes, he could still hear, but it was all filtered, with brainwashing sermons drifting into his ear drums at night, starting at curfew. "... Remember to pay your respects to political leaders, which fend off unwanted contaminants of the mind," he meant Individuality, "and protect our society, maintaining effective and orderly function."
Mihal listened to the repetitive reminders that would bore him to sleep. Yet, that night, he knew he wouldn't be able to sleep. The following day was Assignment Day, in which students would graduate and choose out of the several careers selected that are most compatible with their strengths. Mihal had waited eighteen long years for the day, and he had worked hard ever since he could gather a thought. Being the top student with strengths in every category, he would no doubt be granted with the most elite variety of choices. The very thought of it made him giddy. But he was to remain calm, for it was orderly.
He hated order, but to ensure his success, he would conform.
