Lunch with Luke Part 1

After a wretched first week of highschool, being tormented by popular and older students and sitting alone at lunch, I decided to wander the hall ways to get to know the hell hole I'll be staying in for the  next four years better. After a painstakingly long morning of science and gym I passed through the quiet hallways at lunch and quickly made my way through the tech and auto wing of the school. I covered my nose with my navy blue uniform shirt from the weird chemical smells seeping through the doors of classrooms.
As I got to the end of the hallway I stopped dead in my tracks to find what would be my home for the next four years. The music hall where the one and only music classroom lay. Paintings done by the students of musicians covered the walls. Students lined the hallways playing guitars or just chatting with friends. It seemed as though all other misfits or rejects like me were drawn to this hallway. I heard lots of simultaneous practicing coming from the music room. I swung open the heavy door, hesitant to walk inside. I was happy to see other kids, from all different walks of life. They all had welcoming smiles and said hello. I introduced myself and asked where the guitars were kept. My fingers itched to play. I passed a few girls practicing saxophone, two dudes jamming to a blink 182 tune in the corner and a mop of curls smashing the drums away like no one else was in the room. As instructed where to go, I opened a practice room door to find a guitar, but instead I found a blonde boy with slicked back hair and thick framed glasses softly playing guitar with his back to me.
He abruptly stopped and spun around when he heard the door close. His blue eyes looked into mine as though they longed for somebody as he looked me up and down. I smiled sheepishly as my cheeks turned pink.
"Sorry, I was told there were guitars in here.." I mumbled shyly. He was trying to read my face and could tell I was shy. He pulled his lunch off the chair in front of him and patted the seat for me to sit down.
"You need to get here earlier if you want a guitar at lunch." He said mocking the senior music students.
I laughed and took the seat in front of him. He told me his name was Luke and I told him mine was Scarlett.
After a moment of silence he asked me if I was taking music class this semester. I shook my head and told him I didn't think it was an option when I picked courses. He told me that he was in grade 9 band class before lunch and that some spots were now available because some kids decided to switch courses.
My eyes lit up when I realized I would be switching out of gym class tomorrow. I told him I would love to join the class and I would go to the guidance counselor after school to switch. His face lit up and his eyes were filled with hope; hope that he just found a new lunch buddy and best friend.
We ate our lunches and played twenty questions to get to know each other better. I found out he was in my last period math class, and his locker was down the hall from mine. I also found out he had an undying love for penguins and Spongebob. He found out that I have two older brothers, and I love all music except for country. He asked if my brothers knew Ben and Jack and I nodded. "Of course, they're always were at my house and enjoyed pranking me." I groaned.
I asked him why we had never met until now and he shrugged. He told me he was glad we finally had met and I agreed.
Luke asked if I would like to play before the bell rang. I nodded and he passed me the guitar. Without a single thought in my mind I immediately started playing Spanish Romance/ Romanza, which was the toughest song I've ever played.
I stopped halfway through with a sigh of defeat. I didn't realize he was staring until I looked up. His eyes sparkled, full of curiosity. He asked me why I stopped playing and I told him it was because my fingers didn't reach across 5 frets and a lot of the upcoming chords were hard to manage with my small hands.
He chuckled raising his hand up towards mine and asked me for my hand to compare sizes.
I let out a giggle when his long fingers and palm basically swallowed my own.
The bell rang causing Luke to pull his hand away to pack up his things.
We walked out of the music room together towards our lockers in the English hall upstairs.
As I closed my locker after getting my books for 3rd period I saw Luke staring in my direction. I asked him if he would meet me back here to walk to math.
He awkwardly waved and said "Sure, see you soon." As I started to turn around I saw him hitting himself in the forehead for acting weirdly.
I watched the clock during my geography class, praying the bell would ring soon. My heart started to race as math class became closer. I questioned myself if I had a crush on this boy or if I was just excited that I finally made a friend.
When the bell rang I basically skipped to my locker to get my books and meet Luke to walk to class. Luke wasn't to be seen. The bell rang and I was late. As I made my way down the quiet math hall, I heard a boy yelling and another whimpering, being thrown up against a locker.
