I heard crying as I made my way down the stairs. I followed the sound to the door of the kitchen, and pushed it open.

"Mommy?"

She was lying sprawled out on the floor, a broken bottle that had held alcohol, but was emptied, was next to her.

Her eyes snapped up to me, and in them was something that I had never seen before.

Pure hatred.

-

"Come on!" My mother screeched at me. She was fuming.

"I didn't do it mommy! I swear!" I sobbed, her hold on my wrist was starting to burn. She stopped outside the room, and I tried to pull away.

"You couldn't just keep your fucking mouth shut, could you? Now I have to take care of that perfectly nice woman."

"Please mommy! Don't hurt her!" I cried as she shoved me into the room, locking the door behind her.

"You left me no choice, and now you'll be punished."

She turned, the knife in her hand shined in the light. "Please mommy..." I backed into the corner, the tears staining my cheek.

She stared at me with hatred clear in her eyes, her lips twisted into an evil smile. She walked over to me, taking her time, before lifting my shirt and carving into my skin, ignoring my pleas and cries.

The next morning, my 3rd grade teacher was found murdered in her home.

-

My eyes were squeezed shut as I listened to my door opening. The only thing I could do was hope it was someone there to kill me, I couldn't take the torture my mother would put me through. It was too much.

I knew it was too good to be true when I cracked open my eyes, as light flooded the room, and spotted my mother standing by my door with a man I had never seen before, his arm was wrapped around her waist.

She pressed a hard kiss to his lips, and he let go of her, walking to me.

I started to struggle as he climbed on top of me, pressing a hungry kiss to my own lips, but he was too strong.

His hand ran down my stomach before he shoved his fingers into my underwear, and inside of me, making me scream out in pain, and fear. I looked over to her, finding her watching me, a smirk plastered on her lips.

I was only 12.

-

It was a cold night, but that didn't bother me. I just ran, as fast as I could.

On my back was a pack that had a little bit of food, water, and the only memories I had left of my father. If my mother knew I had them, she would have been very angry.

I was in a place I didn't recognize, but I stopped anyway. If I kept going I would pass out. I found a bench, and made myself comfortable.

I wasn't afraid of death.

If anything, I yearned for it. I couldn't care less if someone murdered me as I slept, but instead, when I awoke, I was startled to find the face of a girl who had to be around my age staring at me.

Her brown skin, and curly brown hair sparkled with snow, and her chocolate brown eyes were filled with worry.

"Hi, I'm Anna."

-

I awoke with a start, opening my eyes and glancing around the white room.

I didn't have my glasses, and the only sound being made in the room was the quick beeping of the heart monitor. I could feel the tears roll down my cheeks.

I sat up in bed, my neck aching.

I tensed as the door suddenly opened, but calmed down instantly when I saw that it was Zack. A cold cup of water in his hands.

He looked startled to see me sitting up, but put the cup down, rushing over to me. "Are you okay? Fuck.. I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have left you."

He carefully pulled me into his arms, and I hugged him back.

"It's not your fault, you didn't know that would happen.." I spoke softly, and then he asked the question I was dreading.

"Who was she?"

I took a deep breath, before explaining everything from my father's death, to running away and meeting Anna, and every gruesome thing in between.

He was fuming by the time I finished, and I could feel his fists clench against my back. "I'll kill her." He forced out, his whole body tense.

I brought my hands up to his face, and pressed a soft kiss to his lips. "Please, don't. She'll get what she deserves, but I don't want you to do it."

He calmed down slightly, and I moved over, letting him climb into the bed with me. He was cautious of my neck, and situated his head against mine, taking deep breaths.

My eyelids were growing heavy, and this time I didn't fight it. I closed them, my mind shutting down, while he ran his hands over my hair.

It was when he started singing softly, that my heart fluttered, and I realized then, that I was really falling for him.
