“Miss Westbrook, you made it. Here, there are some people I’d like to introduce you to.”

Mr. Smith beckoned me to follow him through the throng of people, leading me to a few gentlemen in the back of the room. “Mike, Gunther, I’d like you to meet my trusted accountant, Miss Roxanne Westbrook," he raved as I bowed to them.

Though I didn't know who was who, both were handsome men, although, the one blond fellow seemed older than the other--an olive-skinned gentleman with dark hair--and scruffier too.

“She’s more beautiful than you described Erwin. And you’ve been hiding her from us this whole time?” the blond jeered. “Ah, anyways, It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss Westbrook. My name is Mike, but you may call me Mr. Zakarius.”

“I too, agree with Mr. Zakarius, Miss Westbrook," the other stated, smiling in a confident fashion. "I am Gunther Schulz, though I do not mind what you call me.”

I shook both of their hands. “Well I didn’t know Mr. Smith referred me to me as an attractive woman, but thank you for the compliment, Mr. Zakarius, Mr. Schulz.”

“She’s humble as well? You picked a good one, Erwin,” Mr. Zakarius commented, leaving Mr. Schulz groaning at his inappropriate behavior.

“Miss Westbrook," Mr. Smith said, gesturing to the two men. "Mike here is an educational lawyer, meaning he advocates for schools and teachers. And Gunther is, believe it or not, our state governor's son.”

“Please don’t be threatened my title, Miss Westbrook.” Mr. Schulz flashed me a sweet smile. “I’m not like those manipulative politicians you hear about. In fact I’m quite the opposite. I’m actually more interested in becoming a doctor and saving lives.”

“You are a kind soul, Mr. Schulz," I remarked, poised. "You’re attitude is optimistic, I do hope you follow your dreams.”

He blushed at my remark, resting his hands on his hips. “You really think so? My thanks, Miss Westbrook.”

He still retained his youthful energy to some degree, which was kind of cute. I conversed with the two for a bit longer, sharing stories and jokes. I was halfway through a funny one Mira told me when someone rested their hand on my shoulder.

I assumed it was Mr. Smith wanting to move on to the next set of people, but I was mistaken when I was greeted with a set of striking cobalt eyes.

“Levi,” I whispered, blinking a few times.

“Surprised to see me here, Roxanne?” He kept his voice low, for the sake of privacy. “You wanted me to come so badly, remember?”

“Well, y-yes, but I thought you would back out at the last minute.”

“You’ve underestimated me then.” He leaned closer and Mr. Smith cleared his throat. Levi pulled back, winding his arm around my waist and stroking my side.

“Levi, pleasant seeing you here," Mr. Smith uttered through gritted teeth. "I believe this is the first time you’ve ever come to one of my parties. Why the sudden appearance?”

“Oh, Erwin, it’s simple," Levi mused, his shoulders bouncing slightly from a small chuckle. "Miss Westbrook persuaded me to come. Work has been slow, so here I am, in the flesh.”

Mr. Zakarius and Mr. Schulz dispersed to other corners of the room, leaving me with Mr. Smith and Levi. The two seemed at odds with each other; Mr. Smith was trying to keep in some pent up anger and Levi looked as though he was having the time of his life.

I started fidgeting, uncomfortable with the rising tension between the both of them. Levi could tell I was nervous and excused us from Mr. Smith, leading me down to an unoccupied part of the building that was away from all the noise.
