When I was a little girl
My momma used to say

And goodness will come your way."

When I was just a toddler
My daddy always said
"Stay in school and get good grades,
Use that pretty head."

When I entered grade school
My grandma once told me
" share your coloured pencils,
And popular you will be."

When I started junior high
My brother told me
"Stay away from boys,
Don't give one single kiss."

When I got to high school
My sister nearly screamed
"Never have a sip of beer,
It's not as fun as it seems."

Momma, daddy, grandma
And my siblings too
I never broke one tiny rule
I did what I needed to do

I was kind
I shared
I stayed in school
I stayed away from boys
I never drank one tiny bit
I carried myself with poise.

Even though I listened closely
And did just what you said
I was never quite good enough
