Chapter 2: Only Two Eyes Can See at One

It was already 7:45pm and I concentrated at the clock, watching it tick over and over again.

Funny it was, how clocks could just work perfectly only turning it once and watching the time flick by in blink of an eye. The sky was dark and the long, mystic clouds caused no stars to be out tonight.

I snapped out of my thinking block and fixed my cat ears in the mirror beside the front door, heading out slickly.

The school was lit up with orange lights, many pumpkins and loads of students coming out and in from the school doors.

Loud music filled up the hallways and came on louder whilst in the gym.

I looked around, searching for any of my friends, or Dan.

Nobody.

Where was my entire grade?

Did I come way too early?

I began to worry and play with my fingers while looking around at the lights, the people dancing and everything else. It was all so fast, like spinning in a circle around and around.

Then, a sigh of relief came from my mouth. It was one of my friends on the soccer team, Kelsey. She had curly blonde hair and the oddest shade of green in her eyes.

“Lily! Glad to see you. I thought I was the only one here,” she said.

“Ah, same with me. I was getting a bit frightened,” I said adding a chuckle after my sentence.

We went to go get some lemonade that was swirling in a transparent bowl on the snacks table. Soon after, Dan arrived joining in on our constant lemonade sipping.

“People actually dance at these things?” Dan asked, looking around.

“That reminds me, I should get moving. See you guys later,” Kelsey said loudly over the music.

I nodded and turned back to Dan, who was eyeballing the pretzels from every angle. The moment was beginning to become painfully awkward and I was eager to find something to chat about.

We began to dance, after begging Dan for the trillionth time and giving him a puppy-dog face.

The typical ‘sprinkler’ and ‘robot’ was performed by the one and only, me.

I checked my phone right as we sat back down from dancing and socializing for a while; it was already 12:30am.

Everybody was getting pretty tired at the moment and many were already leaving the gym.

Flashing lights began to shut down, same with the lit-up pumpkins.

“I’m going home, it’s super late,” I said, yawning after my last word.

“Alrighty. G’night Lils,” Dan spoke, his voice seemed sleepy but still full of excitement.

Lils?

Since when did Daniel call me Lils?

It was probably just a one-night thing because of all this dancing and talking and just every single thing about this night gave me an enormous headache.

My bed was comfy and warm, snuggling up to my pillow, I fell fast asleep in just a few minutes.

The weekend was rubbish (picking up from Dan’s vocabulary, of course.) and chilly all night and day. School wasn’t so great either, unless you are in love with mathematics, physics and all that razz. My days were beginning to get lonelier and lonelier, nothing filled me up anymore.

I was always just empty.

Nothingness.

It was a plain Friday afternoon already, the days had skipped quickly, passing on and on. The doorbell rang quite loudly and I walked downstairs to open the doors.

“Yes?” I asked, opening the door without looking.

“Hey! I haven’t seen you in days, where were you? Have you been skipping school? Whaaaat?” Dan asked as he barged inside.

“Uh, well yes. I did miss two days of school. I’m just feeling a bit under the weather this month,” My face turned pale and cold as I spoke.

He looked at me, up and down, side to side and then finally began talking.

“Hmm, well I see. Maybe a hot chocolate can make you feel better? A bear hug? Movies?” Dan went back into his own imaginary world and I disappeared into the darkness.

I nodded at all of those questions and sat down near the burning fireplace warming up my hands. Daniel left after a while, we talked about school, homework, and anything that we could think of.

I heard the doorbell ring once again, sighing, I stood up to go open the door.

“Hey Lily!” My mother spoke, smiling greatly and kissing my cheek.

“Ah, darling!” My father said and gave me a tight hug.

It was the first time I saw them in weeks, most likely because of their business trips all over the world.

“So,” my mother began, sitting down near the fire.

“We are going to visit your relatives in Paris! What do you think?” she said.

I was amazed but scared,“Well-uh, err. Why though?” I asked.

“Because, my darling! Our family is part of zee royales now, your uncle is getting married to a very speshul’ royale!” my father said with his heavy French accent.

“Really?! When do I start packing?” I happily said, faking it slightly.

They pulled out plane tickets for Sunday, and I rushed upstairs to pack anything fancy and elegant. My suitcase was packed shut, full of accessories, make-up and lots of elegant dresses and shoes.

I called Daniel and told him I’d be away for a week or so, not mentioning the reasons, it didn’t matter anyways. Saturday was freezing causing me to wear my fuzzy socks and slippers ever since I had awoken in coldness. The day was finally tomorrow, it had hit me that I was going to meet royal people and they were going to be my family.

The thought made my day brighter, and it was the first and last thing on my mind all Saturday. I set my alarm to early morning, to get ready for the long and tiring plane ride. It was going to be the highlight of this tiresome year.

I laid flat on my bed, wrapping my legs in the sheets, just thinking. Thinking about how I’ve changed, what I’ve done over the past few years and what I need to do to succeed and make my future exactly as I want it to be.

Most of the time, I was silent and just stared blankly at the chipped holes in my pure white ceiling which were never really fixed. I could feel the moonlight touching my cheeks, making them entirely cold. This was it, I was tired of waiting, tired of just thinking.

Closing my eyes slowly, I drifted away into my mind, dreaming the most exquisite dreams I could possibly come up with and waiting for the hour to finally arise.
