(OPENING)

INT. A MANHATTAN CAFE--NOON

JOHN COUNTY, age 33, and JANE FROST, age 31, are sitting a table, having a conversation. JOHN, hard-boiled, husky and rugged looking, has light brown-blondish hair and wears a grimace on his face. JANE, lovely, youthful and fair skinned with long strawberry hair, looks equally grim. The air is thick between them, as neither of them want to address the matter they have come here to discuss.

Jane looks down into her coffee cup. She stirs it for a moment, and then...

"John, I need to tell you something."

"What is it?" asks John.

Jane is blunt.

"The truth."

"The Truth?" asks John.

Jane nods.

"What do you mean: the truth?" John asks. "The truth about what?"

Jane exhales.

"Everything".

John looks at her strangely. He doesn't understand. She doesn't expect him to.

"About you?" asks John.

"No," she sighs once more. "No John. It's about you. You."

"Me? The truth about me?" John almost chuckles, he is not believing this. "What's the truth about me? What don't I know about myself?"

"Much," says Jane.

John's smile fades. He's worried.

"What do you mean?" asks John. "What is it?"

"It...It's not just about you," says Jane. "It's about him."

John looks into Jane's eyes. He doesn't need to ask any more questions. He knows who she's talking about.

"Him," John says, grimly.

"Now, John please, don't get upset," Jane pleads.

"I told, you...I don't want to talk about him."

"We have to!" argues Jane.

"Why?" John asks. He's losing his temper. It's paining him. Something excruciating.

She can see the anguish in his eyes. Jane has no choice. She has to tell him. "Because you're both..."

TWO GUNSHOTS are fired.

Jane screams.

All goes black.

The GUNSHOTS echo in the darkness like roars of thunder, until at last they diminish.

EXT. MANHATTAN SKYLINE-- DAWN (One year ago)

The City of Manhattan appears quiet and unusually tranquil upon the rooftops. As the camera pans down, we can observe the usual hustle and bustle of the crowded streets as people race to work.

Further into the city...

A different series of buildings are presented. Newer skyscrapers towering over older, smaller office buildings. There is a sense that the looming towers will squeeze (or crush) the smaller neighboring buildings out of existence.
