“Drew?”

A cute blonde nurse smacking on a piece of pink bubblegum summoned Drew from where she waited. Drew’s head snapped up from where she stared at the tiled floor her eyelids becoming heavy. She glanced at her watch like she always did and stood up.

“Yes?”

Linda glanced around noticing Drew was the only one in there, something not unusual for Ronaline, a small town and the last thing from wild.

“Sara is being settled in for the night.”

“Of course. How is she doing?”

“She’s been pretty quiet. Will you come on back with me please?”

“Sure.”

Drew paced around Sara’s room anxiously waiting for her and Rebekah to come in. She checked her watch for the umpteenth time before she saw Sara being rolled through the doorway with Linda behind her pushing the wheelchair. Sara met eyes briefly with Drew before lowering them ashamed. Linda helped her into bed and gave her something to swallow to help her fall asleep. Rebekah came in shortly. She mainly told them goodnight and that she would be back first thing in the morning to check on her. Drew nodded absorbing all her words and instructions. Rebekah hugged Drew; they had known each other for a while now. “Take care. Night Sara.”

Sara just nodded her head unsurely. Drew pulled a chair closer to her bedside. She didn’t know whether or not to look over at her. Drew began to speak so she felt obliged to look her direction.

“How do you feel?”

Sara’s mouth opened but no words came out. She didn’t know what to say. Drew understood and placed a gentle hand on her.

“I’m sorry, Sara.” Sara stared at her in utter shock.

““I’m sorry I made you come. I couldn’t let you go with him.” Drew continued, needing to get it all out. “I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t live with myself knowing I left you there. I know I probably messed up some things for you, a lot of things. I’m really sorry. I never meant to do that.”

Drew waited for Sara to say something in return, but when she didn’t, so she stood to leave.

“I’ll let you get some rest. Good night.” She turned to leave and give Sara the time alone.

“Wait.” Sara said barely above a whisper. She didn’t want her to go. She needed someone. Tears started to streak down her face in pure exhaustion.

Drew looked back at her and saw the tiredness and confusion in her eyes.

Back by her side, Drew tucked a loose strand of Sara’s hair that had fallen loose from her ponytail.

Sara inhaled deeply, trying to keep her voice steady. “He’s all I have.”

Drew processed her words as she started into another fit of tears. Drew squeezed her hand lightly. “No he’s not.”

“He’s going to be so mad. He’s not coming back. He won’t come back after this.” Her voice broke, as more tears rushed down her face. She put her head down into her hands. Drew was a little unsure of what to do. For a moment, she wondered what she would do if this were her daughter, if her daughter was twenty-two years old and had just bore the unthinkable. Drew grew numb thinking of her sweet little girl, with blonde curls and blue eyes, being taken advantage of. Awkwardly, she leaned in and hugged Sara.

“It’s okay, baby. Get some rest. Let’s worry about it tomorrow.”

Sara’s shoulders trembled and she felt herself reluctantly give into the hug. Drew hugged her for a long time and she embraced the comfort more openly than she imagined. Drew knew the perfect time to break it up and slowly eased her to lie down. She stayed by her bedside until she fell asleep. Then, silently she walked out the hospital doors to an empty home.

Once she arrived home, she knew she made the wrong choice not to stay with her.

She contradicted herself, standing in the shower, letting the hot water soak into her sore muscles. Slowly the tension, disappeared from her neck and shoulders, and the same loneliness filled the void space in her heart. She sighed and leaned against the shower wall concerned for Sara and feeling guilty for leaving her. “Go back. Go back and be with her.” she said aloud.

She finished up her shower and changed into a pair of comfy sweats and t-shirt. She tried to talk herself out of it, but then she thought of Sara waking up with no one there for her after a hell bent night. Sara wasn’t that much younger than her, and both were alone.

Slowly she brushed her teeth and stared at her reflection in the mirror, make-up-less, and looking more tired than she felt. She stuffed her briefcase with her laptop, wallet, multiple chargers, a book, and cell phone. She locked her door behind her and climbed into the driver’s seat of her car. Sitting alone in her car, she took a deep breath and let silent tears roll down her cheeks. She sniffled as she started her car up and made the long drive back to the hospital. The whole way there, she couldn’t help but think of her daughter. She compared her to Sara. They looked nothing alike, Sara’s brown straight hair and brown eyes were opposite of Claire’s blonde curls and blue eyes. Still there was something about Sara that reminded her of Claire. She racked her brains until she arrived at the hospital. Then it came to her. When Claire became very sick, she had the same look in her eyes as Sara. Drew rested her head on the steering wheel, remembering her daughter in the hospital. She shuddered. She opened her door and let the fresh, summer breeze wash over her.

She paced quickly away from her car and back into Sara’s room.  She let out a breath, when she saw Sara peacefully asleep, lying on her side. Her arm was tucked under her head and her mouth was slightly open.

Drew sat down, the light from the hallway streamed into the dark room, through the partially opened door. She watched Sara sleep, inhaling and exhaling. Her eyebrows creased and she let out a short moan.

“Raleigh.” She muttered. She twisted abruptly.

“Raleigh, stop.” Sara curled up tighter into a ball. Drew watched her thrive around.

“Leave me with him.” Drew stared at her now paying more attention.

Is she dreaming about me? She wondered.

“Don’t, Raleigh, don’t hurt her. She’s trying to…” Sara winced in her sleep.

“Don’t help. Go.”

When her talk died down, Drew lightly moved her back into a comfortable position. When she sat back down into her chair, her mind was spinning. Gradually, she settled and she nodded off to sleep, her last thoughts of Raleigh.
