Disney draws their movie plots from classic fairy tales, but they often take artistic license. And by "take artistic license," I mean they leave out important details, like if the main character dies or if the world is a miserable, unfair place. Enjoy these comparisons between Disney movies and the real stories they are based on.

8. Tiana

Film Title: Princess & the Frog
Film Release: 2009
Country: New Orleans

The Princess and the Frog is a popular Disney movie, based, very loosely, on Brothers Grimm's The Frog Prince. To be fair, its storyline does tally with the modern versions of the original tale. While the modern variants all fixate on the good-hearted princess kissing the frog, the original tale says that the princess, disgusted by the frog that tricks her into making a deal, throws the frog prince against the wall and breaks his spell, with some earlier versions suggesting that the frog just tries to spend a night on the princess' pillow. An even more violent version says she has to cut off the frog's head.

9. Rapunzel

Film Title: Tangled
Film Release: 2011
Country: Germany

According to the Grimms, the reason the wicked witch gets to make off with baby Rapunzel is that her dad stole herbs from the witch's garden to meet his wife's cravings, and when he got caught, he agreed to hand over his first-born. Rapunzel gets stuck in the tower, letting down her hair for the witch, but when a passing prince hears her singing, he decides to pay Rapunzel a visit himself. He visits her, secretly, several times, and the witch only finds out because Rapunzel gets pregnant, and innocently asks why her belly's getting so big.
In a rage, the witch cuts off the girl's hair, uses it to lure the prince back into the tower, then chucks him off the top, letting him fall into a thorn bush that plucks out his eyes. Eventually, though, there is a happy ending where the couple get back together, and Rapunzel's tears heal the prince's eyes.

10. Elsa

Film Title: Frozen
Film Release: 2013
Country:  Norway

Disney's tale of two sisters, Frozen, is very loosely based on a book called The Snow Queen by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. In the original version of the story, a demonic troll creates a looking-glass that reflects even the most beautiful things back as being ugly and hideously distorted. When the mirror is accidentally shattered, the pieces scatter all over the world and splinters of glass land in people's hearts, turning them cold and cruel, or in their eyes, making them incapable of seeing beauty. One unfortunate little boy gets a splinter in his heart and his eye, corrupting him so much that he runs away to live with the powerful Snow Queen. This fairy tale does at least have a happy ending, but it doesn't have a happy snowman.
