My eyes shot in the direction of the noise, and I caught a glimpse of a passing shadow.
"Well," I said aloud, "since we already know you're here, might as well come out, huh?"
I walked over to Bryn and nudged him with my foot. He woke in a groggy haze. I could see him looking up at me from the corner of my eye.
There was no reply from the attackers in the forest.
"No?" I dipped my knees and charged, grabbing my sword from the ground, yelling out, "Then I guess I'll attack first!"
My normally lazy feet were brought to life with adrenaline. A small smile bit at my lips.
I was met with an onslaught of vines and branches.
"Runed," I mumbled. My sword came out of its sheath and sliced the first branch in two, sending its end flying behind me. I turned back to the two shocked boys watching me. "Careful of the runed."
I went back to the fight, cutting of the tip of another vine. I made my way deeper into the brush, ducking and dodging the malicious foliage.
"Come on, friend, can't we get along?" I asked in a kind voice.
There was no reply, only more vines, which I took as a no.
Oh well. I cut the tip of a branch which was meant to impale me. Little asshole. I sped my pace a bit, ducking under a branch and jumping over a rouge root. When I thought the attack might go on forever, I caught sight of the runed girl controlling the foliage.
She was looking at me with big, horrified eyes. She was right to be afraid of me. Not many people could make it through a supernatural attack and walk out unharmed. But I had no plans of walking out. I went deeper.
When the girl realized I had no intention of letting her hurt me, she dropped her hands and bolted. Her feet moved like she was used to running in forests, but I was used to chasing people.
When I was three feet behind her, I jumped, taking her down under me.
"No!" She screamed, bringing her hands up.
Foliage gripped onto my arms. Instinctively, my rune seeped out, tearing the vines and branches to shreds. The girl looked up at me with horrified tear filled eyes. In a quick motion, I brought my hand across the side of her neck and knocked her out.
I didn't have any of my supplies with me, so there wasn't anything I could do here.
Picking her up, I slung her over my shoulder and started carrying her back too my little makeshift camp.
When I got there, I found two unconscious bodies laying on the floor. Not my guys, they were standing with swords in their hands.
"Good job, guys," I commented, dropping the girl on the hard ground. I walked over to my satchel and pulled out my small supply kit. "You're surprisingly not useless."
Zeke glared at me, sheathing his sword. "And you're surprisingly agile for someone who sleeps all day."
I smirked, walking back over to the unconscious girl.
My knee touched the ground as I kneeled down to her.
"What're you doing?" Bryn asked, curiously peeking over my shoulder.
"Take a guess," Zeke answered for me.
Bryn looked back to me. "You're going to take her rune?"
I nodded.
I started with the more obvious areas; legs and arms, searching for a run. When I saw none, I moved to her back. Taking a knife to the long dress she'd stupidly decided to wear, I cut it open. And there it was, a small green rune. It was decently sized, though nothing special, at only seven inches long.
