“Mike!” Charlie kissed the man sitting by the restaurant’s bar as soon as she reached him.

“Hey, there,” he responded. “How was the big day?”

“It was sensational!” She sat beside him and quickly ordered a drink. “We did it, Mike! We’ve made it!”

The man smiled at his fiancée. “That’s my girl.”

“And Dr. Lawrence let me name him,” she continued, excited. “I called him Michael, after you. My little gift for our 4 year anniversary.”

“Oh, well, does it mean I should be jealous?” he asked, jokingly.

“If you don’t be careful, who knows?”

Mike’s phone rang just as Charlie got her drink. He quickly took a look at the screen and sighed.

“I must go,” he said. “It’s work.”

“Now?” Charlie looked at her watch. “Mike, it’s almost 11PM!”

“I know, I know,” he stood up, getting his wallet. “But you know I can’t just ignore it. There is a case downtown, I think they found a body or something. I will meet the team and we’ll go investigate.”

Charlie sadly watched as Mike paid for his drinks and grabbed his jacket. He noticed her unsatisfied look, and kissed her.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s our anniversary,” she reminded him.

“And I promise I will make it up to you,” he said, stroking her dark hair. “But I might have to do it tomorrow.”

“It’s not the same.”

“I know, but I will make it up to you, and you will be so surprised you will forget about tonight.” He winked at her.

“Well, I don’t have any alternative, do I?” she sighed. “I’ll see you tomorrow, then.”

Mike kissed her again, and quickly left. Charlie knew that being engaged to a CBI agent was a challenge, and many times she ended up frustrated, with interrupted dates and ruined nights like that. The restaurant was starting to become crowded, which made her uncomfortable; she didn’t want to go home either, where she’d be alone and angry.

Well, I suppose I can work for the night,” she thought, as she paid for the drink.
