During a fresh night in Colorado, Killian Jones opened the door to his apartment after a long day of working as the bodyguard of an infamous politician during his stay in the country.

The job had not been easy. His client was very cranky and it was pretty hard to keep an eye on him during the conferences, more because he didn't follow most of the established protocols.

Killian put his backpack on the floor, not really caring about leaving it in the middle of the living room. After all, he was the only inhabitant of that little apartment.

Seconds after this, he took off his jacket and threw it to the couch before putting a package of popcorns inside the microwave.

"About time," he said to himself as he took out a beer from the fridge.

Suddenly, Killian felt a funny vibration in his pocket. It was his phone ringing, so he took it out.

"Hello?" he answered.

"Night, Killian." Robin said from the other side. "How are you? Let me guess... You're on a date with some lovely chick you just met."

Killian chuckled. "Not today, mate. It's just me, a bowl of popcorns and Netflix."

"Ah! Really? Well, that sounds fun too."

"Aye, quite. So what's up boss?"

"I know you had a busy day and you probably just want to have some rest but I already have another client, if you're willing to accept the job of course. I just sent you an email with the files, but I'll give you a quick summary of the case."

"Okay, I'm listening."

"You know David and Mary Margaret Swan? They have been my clients for a very long time."

"Never heard of them."

"Well, they have a 27 year old daughter who survived to an intrusion in her own house. The person tried to kill her. She is wife to an important entrepreneur and that makes her an easy target too. Her parents asked me to get her my best bodyguard, so..."

"You thought of me. Flattering." Killian said smiling as he took out the popcorns carefully and placed them in a bowl.

"Yeah. It's a great job with many perks. Besides, the Swans are more than clients to me, they are friends, so I want to provide them the best. You're my first option, Killian. I'm asking you to do this as a friend, not as your boss. I trust you enough to take care of Emma but if you don't want to... It's up to you, man."

There was a small pause between them before Killian sighed and spoke. "Alright. I'll take a look at the files and give you an answer by tomorrow."

"By tonight. I'm afraid that Mary Margaret doesn't want to wait any longer."

"Got it. Thanks, boss." he said before ending the call with Robin.

Killian heaved another sigh.

"Well, seems like Netflix has to wait... But not the popcorns."

He made his way to the desk and turned on his laptop, finishing the bowl of snacks as he thoroughly read Emma Swan's case and files.

Robin was right. It seemed to be a hell of a job. He would get a good salary, many personal benefits and more experience since he had barely worked for rich entrepreneurs.

Nevertheless, there was a problem. If he accepted he would have to move from Colorado to Los Angeles because Emma lived there.

Moving meant a big change. Not that Los Angeles was a far away place, but Colorado was the state he had known for the last four years, where he had made some good friends and the place he was proud to call home.

On the other hand, his brother Liam lived in that Californian city too, so he would be able to see him more often. Plus, he had always loved LA. It was such a sunny and beautiful place he would adore to live in.

Killian thought about it for some minutes, really making emphasis on both the advantages and disadvantages of the job, before grabbing his phone and calling Robin.

"Hey, it's me." Killian said, taking a look through the window where he had an astonishing view of the city below the starred sky.

"Do you have an answer already?" Robin asked taken aback.

"Aye. I'm in."

The following day...

"You what?!?!" Emma said loudly right after her mother told her she had hired a bodyguard for her and that he was arriving in less than three hours.

"Look, darling," David began as calmed as possible, "the fact that someone got inside your house means you're probably in danger. You are wife to an important entrepreneur of Los Angeles. That makes you a vulnerable target."

"And we know that you still feel insecure about going back and continue with your life, and that's okay." Mary Margaret explained. "So we thought that if you had someone watching over you then you would feel better and won't be afraid."

"You know I'm already 27, right?" Emma told them annoyed.

"And you know we're still you're parents no matter how old you are." Mary Margaret said loudly.

Emma hadn't heard her mother speak to her in such way since she was in her teenage days, which made her feel odd.

"Honey..." her mom said, this time softly, "We are worried about you. We can't just sit here and do nothing about this situation. Let us help."

"By getting me a bodyguard without my concern?"

David and Mary Margaret stood quiet. They didn't want to start an unnecessary fight, neither did Emma.
There was an uncomfortable silence between the Swans where only the birds singing at the distance could be heard.

Placing the cutlery on the table, Emma stood up before heading outdoors.

Her parents' house was a magnificent place to live in. It was located in the outskirts of the peculiar state of Colorado, surrounded by tall trees and colorful nature. The house itself was lovely, it was constructed around the nineteenth century and redesigned on its inside when David Swan bought it for him and his family.

Acquiring such house was not a difficulty for a man of David's level. Like Walsh Anderson, he was an entrepreneur, only that more important than his son-in-law. He was the CEO of several exportation companies across the States, giving him a lot of recognition in the business world.
But David was no longer that into his work. He wanted to dedicate more time to his personal life and his wife now that Emma was a grown up. He still made business trips and attended meetings, but it wasn't with regularity.

Emma kept walking around, her feet stepping on the humid grass and the breeze moving her hair. It was a fresh sensation she couldn't enjoy every day. Nonetheless, she wasn't really in the mood of relishing such moment. She was still thinking about the whole bodyguard situation.

A bodyguard? Is it really necessary? I mean... Having someone behind me all the time, like a shadow following me wherever I go?

On the other hand... My parents are right. I am still scared about going back because I feel unsafe. I just... I don't want to admit it to anyone.

Emma kept walking for a very long time before heading back to the kitchen, where Mary Margaret drank some coffee and David washed the dishes.

"So... At what time is the bodyguard coming?" Emma said before her parents exchanged triumphal smiles.
