Sweet and subtle like the skeleton leaf’s kiss,

You stole over to me, tempting sweet breath.

Auburn hair, sandy skin. I’m drowning again.

In your eyes?

No! Without a doubt.

It’s that mucky bog love in your heart.

I nearly tear myself half apart,

In my wild attempt to escape.

Amber; so rich, so warm.

Colour of Gypsies, Autumn, Dust Storms.

It sits in the ring that you gave.

But observe that Amber, what do you see?

At first you see the reflection of me.

Then little formed insects trapped and dead,

Peer back at you, long gone.

Despite the trees safety to them, once sworn.

Skeleton now bones.

I pick up a fallen leaf and peer through it.

Fish shaped but without the head.

A dog runs past, wild.

Your hand rests on my elbow,

Your breath on my neck.

You take the leaf and crush it.

From within your palm it crumbles out.

You replace it with a daisy.

Oh your favor what would I do without?

My thought, no doubt.

But that’s right, I don’t think.

Your coat upon my shoulders.

I glimpse the dog for a blink and drop the daisy.

Not that you see.

Then you turn me and we retrace the path home.

A skeleton leaf’s bone.
