Those Yellow Boots

That day on your birthday

When I gave you those bright and shiny yellow boots

You treasured them forever

You never took them off

It did not matter if it was raining

Or ever snowing

You wore those boots

Teaching you to ride your bike

It was kind of hard for you to pedal

For you were wearing those boots

The carpet had stains from your muddy feet

Still wearing those boots inside the house

And when I played my old records on that record player

You danced and danced all day

Jumping giddily around in those yellow boots

Playing a game of dress up with you

No matter what you wore

It always consisted of those same yellow boots

You also loved to draw pictures

Quite good for someone that young

And each picture you drew

They would be wearing boots- yellow ones like the ones you wore

Other birthdays you got presents

One you even got some boots

Pink, which was your favorite color

But you just tossed them aside

And scurried off in the boots you already had

Every night I would tuck you in bed

And you would place your boots at the end of your bed

Ready for in the morning when you woke up

When I came home from a day at school

You would run up to me arms open

Splashing around in your yellow boots

Hitting all the puddles just barely slipping

Come to think of it they were a little big

But you still wore them

You wrapped your tiny arms around my bent over neck

And hugged me tight

Like I was leaving tomorrow

But really I should have been the one hugging you

And as I place those dirty boots on your grave

Scratching off some of the dirt coated on them before placing them down

Letting a tear fall

And handing them over to you

So you could wear your boots forever

In your new home up in Heaven
