       SLASH!
We fought our way past zombies, trying desperately to make it out of this hotel and up to the roof where hopefully a rescue team would find us.
We were all full of hope for once.
Come to think  of it, I'd never actually thought we'd make it out of this alive.
But maybe I had been wrong. There's nothing wrong with a little hope!
Besides, it made the fighting much more meaningful. It gave us a new determination to make it out. To live.

          POW!
Zack took down a couple of zombies. He shot one in the shoulder, riling the creature up to attack him. He slammed his strong fist into the corpse's jaw, dismantling it out of place. He kicked the other zombie that was approaching him from behind.
He kicked it a couple of feet behind him and then spun around and shot the creature in the head. The monster collapsed to the ground lifeless once more.
He quickly turned back to the other corpse, taking out his knife and stabbing its head. Blood squirted out from the corpse and onto Zack's hand.
He wiped his hands on the corpse's tattered clothing and went back to looking for a way to the roof.

"What are you thinking about?" Ross played with a strand of my hair in between his fingers.
I paused and stared at the ground, refusing to give in to his puppy dog eyes.
"Do you think we were wrong to leave Ashleigh and Ratliff? What if they're suffering?" I gazed up at him slowly with watery eyes.
He gave me that look that I couldn't help but smile, "Jordan." He took my hands and smiled at me gently, "I know you have a good heart and you have to trust yourself and follow it."
I hugged Ross tenderly, "Thanks Ross, you always know the right thing to say." I said cheesily like we were in some fan fiction.
He shrugged with a laugh, "That's what I'm here for!"
I grinned up at him and laughed in disbelief, "If someone would have told me I'd be standing in the middle of an apocalypse with you, I would have laughed and then called the insane asylum."
Ross smiled, "If someone told me I was going to come to New York to be stuck in the apocalypse with the girl of my dreams, I still would have come."
     My face grew serious, "Really?"
"Pshh! No! You're not that cute, Jordan!" Ross joked.
I hit his arm and turned away from him angrily.
"Jordan!" He laughed and spun me around, "I'm kidding!"
I tried to pout, but I couldn't help but smile looking at that face.
"You're different." Ross narrowed his eyes, "I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the fact that we're here fighting flesh craving monsters, but there's something about you I can't explain."
I opened my mouth in shock. I knew exactly what he meant.
Because I had felt that way since the day I first saw him.
"In a way, I sort of feel like this, all of this-!" He threw his hands and spun around once before coming back and taking my hands, "was meant for us. Like maybe this happened because we were-,"
"supposed to find each other..." We both said at the same time. I turned away shyly blushing with my hands behind my back and kicking my feet on the ground as my hair fell in my face.
He smiled softly as he examined my face, "Yeah..."
I smiled for real for the first time in a long time. I loved how even in the midst of all this sadness and pain, Ross could make me smile. He always could do that, even before we met.
I knew I would be ok in that moment with that smile. No matter what happened.
Being with Ross was well worth it.
                 I was happy.
I still don't know what makes him so different. I mean, all this time my life, my heart, had been revolved around some celebrity. And I don't usually do this. I mean I fangirl over cute boys celebrities or not, but this was different. Ross was different. Something in my heart always told me he was special.
"Ross, I..." I swept my head up to take in that perfect face, but noticed the sad shell of a girl left crying alone against a wall.
        "I'll be right back..."

"You ok?" I sat down by Lynn and let my hand rest on her knee.
She didn't respond, staring straight ahead without blinking her deep blue eyes that now seemed lost in despair.
"Lynn?" I stared at her, urging her to communicate.
"Lynn, talk to me!" I begged her.
       POW!
I jumped a little, unsuspecting her drawn gun.
I glanced behind my shoulder to see a corpse fall to the ground.
I sighed a little, but I was still on edge from the gunshot.
"Lynn... I know what you're going through." I rubbed her leg in condolence.
She jerked her leg away and tilted her head infuriated at me, "No you don't." She clenched her fists and shook her head, "No one understood but him..." She turned her back to me and buried her head her knees.
I sat with hurt slipping through my eyes as I watched her in confusion. I knew she was hurt, but I didn't want her to push me away.
This was the time when we all needed to stick together. We needed each other now more than ever.

        "Rahh!"
Jeffrey shanked the head of an oncoming corpse and sliced his knife out. The corpse toppled over dead as he made his way over to Zack.
"There's an emergency exit over here. I think this staircase leads to the roof." Jeffrey informed him, keeping a wary eye out for him.
"Good job, Jeffrey. You've been a big help." Zack flashed him a fake smile.
Jeffrey attempted to nod or give a weak smile or something so Zack wouldn't realize his suspicions. Jeffrey sighed, maybe Zack's not that bad after all

"Alright, let's head out!" Zack commanded as the four of us followed behind him.
He opened the emergency exit and Jeffrey followed closely behind him.
"Uh!" Lynn took her knife and stabbed a zombie heartlessly before entering the door.
Ross and I exchanged worried glances and then followed behind them.

       CREAK!
   "Here we are!"
The small square door burst open through the ceiling. I felt the warmth of sunlight pierce onto my skin. It felt so nice after being locked inside.
Sunlight was one of my favorite things in the world. I loved feeling the warmth of it's rays beaming down against my face. When I felt the sun against my skin, everything was ok. The world was at peace.
When the door burst open and Zack climbed up the ladder, helping us all climb outside onto the roof, I knew it was over.
"We're free!" I exclaimed running out into the pure sunlight. The sky was turning grey.
It seemed as though there were some grey clouds around.
I prayed they didn't cover the sun. The sun was my reminder that this was all about to end. I would go home. I would see my family. I would be with Ross.
It was a happily ever after in the works.
The roof was mostly barren. There were no signs of any zombies or blood or any death and destruction. It was normal. It was tan and only had a few vents and things around.
"We did it!" I ran over to Jeffrey who was beaming with joy also and hugged him tightly.
Even the once solemn and dark Lynn was cheerful and joined our hug.
"Thanks man." Ross smiled at us, watching my curly locks bounce in the sunlight. He turned to Zack and nodded, "Thanks for getting us out."
     He shook Zack's hand.
Zack cocked his head and gave a weak smile, "Hey, it's what I do."
Ross smiled and nodded a little confused and then turned back to me.
 BOOM!
Thunder roared, but none of us cared. We were happy.
       We were free.
Ross looked up to the sky, "Looks like it might rain!" He exclaimed and threw his arms in the air.
"Yeah..." Zack brushed the back of neck nervously, "Wouldn't want that to happen, now would we?" He put his hands in his pockets and backed behind Ross who had his eyes closed and his head tilted towards the heavens.
Jeffrey opened his eyes, still smiling from their new found freedom when he noticed Zack and Ross a few yards away.
Zack pulled a small thin needle out of his pocket and casually snuck up behind Ross.
      "Ross...!" Jeffrey whispered.
I pulled back from our hug and tilted my head at Jeffrey, trying to process what he was saying. I stared at Jeffrey's wide, concerned eyes.
Almost in slow motion, I turned my head to see it.
      The end of my heart.
"NOOO!" The slow motion me tripped as I turned around and darted towards them a few feet.
     But it was too late.
Zack came up behind Ross and inserted the needle in his side.
"Ah!" Ross fell on the ground in pain.
"Ross!" I cried, but my voice sounded strange and muffled in the unfamiliar atmosphere.
The needle fell to the ground, crunching in half and rolling on the ground until it finally came to a slow and steady stop where Zack's foot came down on top of it and destroyed the tiny glass needle.
And destroyed my heart with it.
