Noah's POV
The autumn wind pierced through my thin jacket. My brown hair swayed slowly and my green eyes watered. "It's too cold to be outside." I say to myself quietly. I can feel a pull in my stomach. I know that felling anywhere and it means I have to get home quick. I have no one to tell about my powers and they are becoming harder and harder to control. My parents were never around to see my outbursts. I walk through the door and yell out "I'm home". No one answered and I walked up to my room. My bones morphed once I closed the door. I yell out in pain.
I tried to fight it,but all I can do is wait until it's finished.
Stop fighting....
I let the transformation happen. Bat wings spring from my back and flutter for a while. When I let my body do its thing it hurts less. My family cat, mushu, walks in and sat next to me.
"Do you figure out how to control your powers?" He tilted his head to the side and then licked his paw. He lifted his head to me with a curious look.
"Yeah I'm getting better at control. I just got to ride it out." I say while I rubbed his head. He gave a Cheshire Cat like smile and licked my hand. Mushu walked over and sat in my lap.
I wish I could stay like this forever... Mushu is the only person who cares about me... He is the only person who is always there for me.
"Noah... You're smothering me." The cat smiled and tried to get out of my grip.
"I gotta go and get dinner, but I'll be back in a while. Do you want me to let you out before I go?" I ask.
"No,I'm fine in here. See you later!" He sat by the door, and watched me until I was out of site.
I walked towards my favorite sandwich shop. All I could think about was my beautiful chicken Parmesan sandwich.
-time skip-
I'm walked home with a warm sandwich in my hand. Two guys looked at me and snickered. One called me over and said, "Hey are your parents Joanna and Laurence Hall?"
"What did they do now?" I wondered quietly to myself. They never get in too much trouble. It can't be that bad.
"You should go check on your house, boy. Also while you at it ask you parents how much they owe my boss." The other goon asked with a condescending tone.
I feared for the worst and pushed past them and ran home. I get about five blocks away and I see a blasé covering my house. Everything when in slow motion. I pushed myself to run faster. I smelled the soot from here.
Give me the strength...
I finally get to the front of my house. My father is sitting there, doing nothing. He did nothing to save the only place I belonged. He didn't even cry.
"What are you doing!? Don't just stand there! Help me!" I tried to run back into the house, but he grabbed me before I could get to the doorknob. "Let me go! I have to save Mushu! Please, I'll be back out! Please let me g-"
Before I could get out of my father's tight grasp, the house toppled before my eyes. Hot tears graced my face and the contaminated sooty air hit my lungs hard. My legs gave out and my father let me go. I slumped to the ground in defeat.
My father just said plainly, "Your mother ran inside the house looking for Mushu too...I'm not losing you to the fire as well! It's just a damn cat! We could have always gotten anot-"
I cut him off," JUST A DAMN CAT! HE WAS THERE FOR ME WHEN YOU AND MY MOTHER WERE TO DRUNK TO GIVE A CRAP ABOUT ME!" I felt nothing towards this man in front of me. I forced myself to stand up. I didn't dare look him in the eye. I took two running steps while two dark wings spread. I flew to the inner city park. I sat in the tallest tree I could find and hoped nobody looks up. I stare at the sky for a moment and look for the Little Dipper just like my mother taught me.
He probably doesn't want a freak like you anymore. Like he barely wanted you in the first place.
Just as I thought that two teens ran over to my tree and looked up. They look like they got in a fight with a wood chipper and lost. The girl jumped on the boy's shoulder and he ran up the tree with super speed. They didn't notice me until they reached a safe branch. They stared at me. The boy walked over with no problem at all. He had black hair and his stormy grey eyes widened with fear. Behind him a small girl with strawberry blonde hair and brown eyes stared into my sole. I finally notice the boy is in my face, so close I want to punch him in his annoyed expression. Before he can say anything, he notices my wings. I look back down the tree and see men in black suites. I look at the people in front of me. And I decided in that moment to help them. I tell them to hold on. They comply (what other choice did they have) I turn into a bear and walk down the tree and hide them behind my large back. We get out of the park undetected. We found a small ally way down the street from the part.
"Will someone tell me what's going on here?!" I shouted a little louder than I expected. The girl is the first one to talk after some glance.
"Hello my name is Nicole and this is Jake.... And we were take away from our homes, along with Jack's twin. We were experimented on and tested through terrible mazes. So we made a plan to escape. We wanted to see our parents once again. The mission didn't go well and Hazel died trying to protect Jack...." She tripped up. Jack comforted Nicole, but he wasn't in a state to be helpful. The tears ran down his face freely. I could tell he blamed himself for what happened. Just as I was about to comfort them, but I didn't know how.
They calmed down and stood up abruptly.
All Jack said was, "It's time to keep moving... Thank you for you help Noah. You're good people." I felt the strangest put as they started to walk away. Like I belong with them more than my own family.
"Wait! Can I come with you? I have nothing to return to and you guys look like you will need a healer on you're side." I was hoping they wouldn't turn me down. They looked at each other and quietly conversed. I was on the edge of my seat. "Noah, you're a good kid but are you sure? I mean if we are caught and they could possibly drag you back too." Nicole stared at me as if she already was empathizing with me. I couldn't put my finger on it but I wanted to stay with them. "I know what I'm getting into... And I'm ready, if your fine with it ." Before Nicole can say anything else, Jack put his arm around me and said one simple word.
