Chapter Five

                The burst of welcoming smiles and voices filled the air as I walked in the room of my fellow classmates. Everybody I knew was wishing me a Happy Birthday.

“Happy Birthday Laurel,” some red head guy said. I wasn’t sure who it was but it was most likely assuming he was on the football team. Wait a minute, I thought they had a meeting?

“GABRIEL!!!” I turned around to look for him to yell at him. But then I was met my nothing but more ‘Happy birthday wishes from everybody else.

“Laurel! OMG! Happy Birthday! I love that outfit! Where did you get it? It is totally Fab.”

“Whoa Lindsey calm down. You are totally going to explode with excitement.”

Lindsey was your everyday excited teenage cheerleader. Her peppy group was all there surrounding her in there blue and white short mini-skirts. Lindsey was one of my closest and dearest friends. Her posy was just her followers who I learned to ignore. They all wanted to be like her. They wanted her hair, her close, her eyes, even her nose her. I wanted nothing of that but her friendship and wardrobe of course. We were best friends how could I not like her style?

“But I can’t it has been eating me up for weeks. It was all I could do not to keep from telling you this morning.”

“I know I know, but have you seen Gabriel? I am totally lost for words on all of this. But quite angry at both my best friends but more Gabriel.” I said it all with a straight face not giving any indication I was joking.

“Oh… Um… we thought… well I thought you would like it. I am really sorry I will get rid of this right now if that’s what you want me to do.”

“Ahahahahahah I am joking with you. I was just surprised. I wasn’t expecting anything this big of a fuss this early in the morning.”

“Well you got it dear darling best friend.”

“Thank-you but I must really go find Gabriel there is something seriously wrong with him this morning.”

“Maybe he has finally realized that he is in love with you after all these years?”

Lindsey was not only the peppy cheerleader but also the cheesy romantic type. She has been telling me for years that Gabriel and I will end up together. I think she is crazy. How could I date my brother for crying out loud? We have done everything together from day one. And he would never like me. He has had a lot of girlfriends and flings. If he liked me then he wouldn’t have dated or had flings. I use to like Gabriel a lot when we were like 14. But I just rubbed it off as if it was my hormones and just me raging to have a guy like everybody else. So I grew out of my ‘I like you stage’ and just fell into the comfy spot of being friends. But deep down I knew I still had strong feelings for him that only kept getting stronger. But I knew I had to ignore it for the sake of our friendship. The only other person who knew I liked Gabriel was Lindsey which was true. And now she won’t stop bugging me about it.

Lindsey and I have been friends since fifth grade. Gabriel and I for the first time didn’t have that class together. There was also another girl in that class, Sinister Sally. She would tug on my braids and call me names. But she only did that because I had Gabriel, the hot best friend. Lucky for me he didn’t like her. So she decided to take her revenge on me. I’m telling you elementary school was a ruff place.
