Chapter two

My sudden impulse decision to run to the woods was a spark of hope that diminished itself quickly.

“Gabriel. The. Woods.” Each word was forced. The lack of air was biting at my lungs. I had to heave and force every word out of me.

“Laurel we almost got caught last time. How can you think to go back their? They are better in the woods. They are faster and smarter.”

“Gabriel if we don’t do something they are going to catch us. Either we run for the woods and get cover from the bullets and have some kind of hope of actually living or we turn around and fight the already lost battle.”

We both kind of looked at each other for a second and then he nodded for me to run for the woods. By now the men had caught up with both of us. They were steps behind both Gabriel and me. We had stopped to argue about what we should do. And I felt a sense of anger for stopping and wasting precious time. The men were yelling and taunting us with every step they took. By now they had called in an entire army. There were helicopters above our heads, targeting us with our own person spotlight. They had Hummers swarming around us. And they had men on foot running with us with guns.

At that moment a hummer swung itself in front of our path to the woods. We were trapped. No escape and no hope of humanity. I was done for it and I would never see the light of day again. No more movies with friends. No more late night tv shows. And no more dates with cute boys.

“This is it Laurel, I’m sorry I couldn’t take you further. I didn’t give you a fair fight. I should have told you sooner.”

“Tell me what?” I was so confused and terrified. But most of all I was defeated. He had kept this from me but why. And what was ‘this’ that he was keeping from me.

“Laurel you are special and far from human.”

What could he mean by this? I wasn’t human?

“That’s right you scum. Now down on your knees before we have to use forceful action.” The brutally ugly man with a huge gun gave me the downfall of never leaving. We were surrounded and I was never going home.

I began to sink to my knees in defeat, but then I saw it. I saw my way out. The tiny bit of hope that died away seconds ago was now in full blast.

I surged myself off the ground and onto the paved sidewalk, I ran past the armed military evil, over a fence, and into the bleak forest that surrounded a house. Gabriel was hot on my heels, and passing me. He was leading the way to freedom. My hope was flourished and thriving, nothing could get us now. We were invincible….
