There are some people who would consider this an opportunity, but so many others would call it an omen. Today is the day of the drawings. They pick a single student out of three thousand to go on a NASA space trip to a yet-unexplored planet. One every two years. So far, all trips have been executed without flaw. And the school has faith that there will never be one. The trips will always be peaceful and educational; peace being a perk, of course.
So image you're sitting in the crowd. You: Tyler Scorch, who has had very tough luck for the past year, failing several exams, and even nearly flunking this year in college, you are so damn sure you're not going to get called. But the odds are always against you, and so when you're called, you don't think it's a good thing. You know, deep in your gut, something's going to go wrong.
