i saw him crying today. it wasn't the good kind of crying, where your face has gone red from laughing too hard and your eyes are watering as a result. it was painful crying. the kind where your throat seems to close in on itself and all you can do is wheeze. it was the crying when the only sound you can make is close to that of a dying animal and there's nothing you can do about it. it was the crying that only someone who'd felt true pain could claim.

i did what any sensible person with the smallest dose of compassion would do. i hugged him. i hugged him so hard i think i felt him wince. but he stopped crying. we broke apart, and silence filled the room once again. then he left.

i wish he wouldn't have left.
