Chapter 1: Riot's POV

The blade sailed magnificently through the air, sunlight glinting off of it as my skilled hand whipped it at the dummy set up before me, slicing through the torso before striking through the heart. I spun around, turning to the dummy behind me and slid my blade cleanly through its neck, the head rolled off the set up and onto the sand causing dust to fly up into the air. Kyle placed his foot on the head, causing it to stop rolling and glanced at me, "Whoa Riot, what's got you so worked up?" He asked, pushing his river brown hair out of his hazel colored eyes. Those eyes that always held a chest of secrets, waiting to be exposed. And also the eyes that were well known for playing tricks on those who still lived in the village of the wretched kingdom.  But we were no longer a part of that. Rather, we were rebels. Those no longer loyal to the king's rule but also well known as the 'scum of the earth' and blamed for nearly all of the kingdom's problems.  The main one being that every single organism needed to live, nations need to grow and become countries of which others would fear. But with lack of so many resources, we're falling apart before we've even begun to grow.

And all that was well before the rebellions began.  You see, the village was laid out in a caste system.  The royals believed that by putting in a caste system, it would prevent some people from believing that they could control everyone. The royals were of course at the top with being in caste 5.  Those who were in 4 were very wealthy and had several connections to the palace or the people ruling.  In 3, it was more of the middle-ground.  And in both 2 and caste 1, you were poorer, had little, may be seen scavenging for food, and most of all, ridiculed.  A one point we all just became sick of it. Asher began by first defecting, and inspired many of the others to follow in his footsteps.  However, the castle wasn't going to have that, if any other royals came along and saw that this kingdom had rebels, they would view this palace as weak.  So the palace declared war on the rebels.  When I was younger, Kyle and I used to hide above the dirt road in a tree, watching as the men marched off to war. Most would never make it back, and those that did had to make the painful journey back home, gather new recruits and go back into the hell they just barely escaped from.

"And they go marching again." I mutter.

Kyle glances at me, obviously confused, "Is that unusual?"

I sigh and shake my head.

He must have sensed that he wasn't going to get any farther with this because he changed the subject rather abruptly, "There was another news report of the royals. Apparently the oldest, Ezra or whatever, just turned twenty-one. They'll be holding a huge bash and they're inviting all the women of the village between ages seventeen and nineteen. The King is trying to hurry him along to get married, not sure what good that'll do the issue of us rebels, but I thought you'd like to know."

I smile to myself. The royal family reports have become know as the reality television series, something people used to have in the past. Kyle told me all about them, apparently it's where people claim that things are truly happening without a script when in fact they are acting and it's all a big show for publicity.  Kyle says they were really popular back then, but I don't know how  people could watch that, much less enjoy it.

I twirled the blade around, my mind wandering, and picked up the head, pushing the button on the back which caused the dummies to put themselves back together. I could tell that Kyle knew something was up, but I was glad he didn't press it. He was nearly my only friend out here. Everyone else seemed to try to put as much distance between me and them. I was the only girl warrior here, and although it was forbidden in the kingdom, it was still looked down upon here. You wouldn't believe the hoops I had to go through to get this far. Kyle was more of an all around person, he could do absolutely anything. We'd been together since we were kids when the war took both our fathers away and our mothers were forced into labor to stay into the kingdom.  We were fourteen when we joined the revolution against the kingdom. It became known as the Uprising and the small amount there was of us, we thought we could overthrow the dynasty. And we tried too. But someone ratted us out and half of the people ended up being behind bars. The rest of us ran.

And for five years, we've been here. Preparing. Most of us don't have all the insider information to know what exactly we're preparing for.  But we all know that it's going to be happening soon. Real soon.

Question was, who was more prepared?

Us or the kingdom?
