Everyone's scared of the little backstreets. They try not to show it but you can clearly see how cautious people get once they pass the opening to one. The way they pick up speed and peer down the road to assess the danger. Everyone thinks the backstreets are the places where muggings, murders and rapes happen. But these happen anywhere and everywhere.
Glancing down the backstreet I call home, I see the loving community come alive. Children knocking on their friend's doors asking to play outside, neighbours gossiping away about the newest scandal, teenagers mucking about on their phones or smoking.
Walking down the street listening to music, I take time to really study my neighbours. Everyone knows each other down my road and will happily stop for a chat. We look out for each other the best we can whether it's helping the oldies with little errands or even just giving some much needed advice. All these people have somehow helped me over the past 3 years and I'll forever be grateful.
Feeling a smile tug on my lips, I think about the long day ahead of me. Working at the garage, going food shopping, dinner with Mrs Burns and then finally curling up in bed and catching up on supernatural.
That probably doesn't sound like a hard day for a normal person but for someone like me, who likes to curl up in bed and sleep the day away, it is.
Too much socialising.
I turn down a little alleyway leading to the garage, the noise of engines and tools growing louder and louder as I grow nearer. Stepping into the entrance I'm welcomed to the sight of Blaise and Arlo dancing around to some rock music with everyone crowded around. If I'm not mistaken I think it was Avenged Sevenfold.
"Boom. Bet you can't beat my moves!", Blaise shouted over the music to Arlo. All the guys started to laugh and tease Blaise that he was shit.
"Psh. Of course I can beat those moves. It'll be a piece of cake.", Arlo shouted back stepping closer to Blaise.
"Go on then. Amuse us.", Blaise countered back gesturing towards the guys.
"Alright alright, enough of this silliness! Everyone get back to work before I sack you all.", exclaimed Boss, earning growls and groans from all the men. Blaise and Arlo gave each other a bro hug before walking off towards a workbench pushing and shoving each other.
No matter what happens, Blaise and Arlo can never get into a full blown argument and stay mad at each other. They were basically brothers.
"Anyone heard from Luna? She hasn't come in yet.", hearing this I push away from the wall I was leaning against and started towards Boss.
"I'm here, I'm here. No need to worry yourselves. What's up Boss?" I grin up at Boss who was towering over my 5"5 frame with his 6"5 self.
He reached down and messed up my unbrushed, already messy hair, "'bout time you got here! Mason just came in with his car and you know how he only trusts it in your hands. He's got a race tonight and wants you to check over it, make sure everything's running smoothly."
I roll my eyes. Typical Mason, bringing in his car at the last minute, "Okay let me just get my clothes on and I'll be right there. Is Mason here or?", I ask making my way towards the back so I can put on my blue overalls.
"Yup. He says and I quote, 'I want to make sure no one damages my beauty.' But let's be honest. We all know he wants to talk to you and make sure you're doing okay.", Boss trails off his voice getting softer.
