"You two know each other?" Lisa glances between the two of them warily, her eyes narrowing.
"No! No, no, no. Oh god, no. No. Nope, no. Uh-uh. No," Elena stammers, shaking her head so fast she sees stars. "No, never met before. Never seen him. Not once. Nope."
"I just read her nametag, sweetheart," Dean says smoothly, reaching out and taking Lisa's hand. Elena catches the movement, her eyes skittering down to their intertwined fingers. Even though she knows better, a lick of jealousy snakes its way through her body. "So doc, that X-Ray?"
"Oh, yes. The X-Ray. For your leg. Because you broke it. Jumping off a building," Elena says harshly, glaring down at Dean. If he had purposefully hurt himself on her watch, she wouldn't be able to forgive herself. She was supposed to make sure he was okay, and if he wasn't, she had failed.
"I didn't jump off the building, Lena! It was an accident, I swear. The beams were just—"
"You don't need to justify yourself to the doctor, sweetie," Lisa reminds him, giving his hand a slight squeeze. Elena pinches her lips together to prevent herself from saying anything. "I know what happened. Her opinion doesn't matter."
"Your girlfriend is going to need to wait here," Elena says shortly, taking several steps back. "I'm going to call a nurse to come bring you to the X-Ray room."
Elena quickly turns on her heels, rushing toward the door as fast as she can. Nothing could make her want to stay in that room any longer than necessary. She's nearly made it out into the hallway, but her ears are unable to stop from hearing Lisa say, "That doctor's a bit odd, isn't she?"
Minutes later Elena finds herself sitting behind an assortment of computers, listening to the distant whirring of the X-Ray machine. The picture of Dean's leg is already beginning to form on the screen, the break in the bone becoming clear. There's a glass separating her from Dean, but the intercom system forces her to hear everything.
"I know it's you in there, Lena," he says softly, trying not to move. They would have to start over if he did. "Come on, talk to me. I'm dying in here."
"You're not dying," Elena says into the microphone. "So shut up and stay still." Sighing dramatically, Dean lifts his head slightly to get a look at her. He can see the way her eyes are squinting at the computers and how tightly her lips are pressed, showing him how pissed she truly is.
"I'm sorry about Lisa. I didn't want you guys to meet that way," Dean says, apologizing to the best of his ability. Elena just continues to click away at her keyboard, refusing to look up. "Or meet at all for that matter."
"She's pretty," Elena comments, an image of Lisa flashing before her eyes. "But she's pretty bitchy."
"Yeah, tell me about it." Dean relaxes after this exchange, understanding Elena is just recovering from the initial shock. He can't blame her. He'd been imagining meeting Damon for weeks now, wondering exactly what he would say to the horrible man. "And for the record, the beams were super slippery. It was an accident."
"Good. 'Cause I would kill you if it wasn't." Dean lets out a huff of laughter just as the image finally forms on the screen. Elena leans forward, calculating the recovery time in her head. Four weeks at best. Sighing, she moves to write it down on his chart when she sees something odd.
Lisa wasn't his emergency contact.
The name reads: Sam Winchester.
