1: Chance Meeting
Oh, hi! Sorry, didn't notice you there. The name's August Park. You'll have to excuse my poor hospitality skills as you've entered at an extremely awkward part of this story. Now where were we? Oh, right.
I sat in the driver's seat, clutching the wheel and screaming terribly. I looked in front of me, letting out a series of hysterical screaming and sobbing. I didn't know what to do... What was I supposed to do?! I looked beside me at my driving instructor and she also looked at me with wide eyes, screaming.
"Oh God, oh God, oh God! I can't believe I just-OH GOD," I said to myself. Shuffling to get the seat belt unbuckled, which proved to be an extremely difficult task while in a frantic state of mind, I replayed what had happened.
It wasn't as though I meant to do it! He jumped out and I... Oh, who am I kidding? I was going to go to jail! I hurried out of my seat and ran to the front of the car. I let out a sob as I saw the body laying there, still as a doll. I knelt down and I put the boy's head on my lap. That was it. I'm going to get sued by his family, become broke, and I'll be disowned by my parents.
"Someone! Someone, help!" I exclaimed. There wasn't anyone around, though. I was in front of a large school and everyone was probably in class. No one was on the streets, and that was most likely because this road wasn't taken much. People usually took the highway to get to the big cities. And here I was. I decided to take this route and it turned out to be the most regretful and horrible decision in my life.
"Please, please, please... If you're alive, then give me a sign!" I said, hoping that maybe-if he was even alive-that he still had his conscience. I let out another sob and looked at my instructor, who was now out of the car and right next to me. She had her hand over her mouth and I knew I wasn't going to get that driver's license anytime soon.
She quickly reached into her pocket and called, what I assumed, the ambulance. She retreating a few steps back and talked to the people on the other line. I couldn't hear what she was saying, though. I was too worried about him. I now noticed he had some kind of uniform on, but it wasn't from a school I recognized. Surely it wasn't from the school behind me. I've walked by this place many times and knew what the uniforms looked like.
Well at least he has a uniform! If he wore casual clothing like your school, you wouldn't have a clue about who he is!
Right, I would have to find out who he's acquainted to and I'll have to apologize first hand. Perhaps give them a basket of fruit? What was I even talking about? He might be dead and I want to give his family a basket of fruit?
But first things first... Was he dead? Then, I remembered that dead men don't have heartbeats. I wasn't sure why I didn't check for his pulse before and it made me feel idiotic. With my fingers crossed, I leaned into his chest and listened for a sound. A kind of thumping or beat.
There it was! Like a small drum at a parade. Yes, he was alive! But I couldn't rejoice yet. What if he entered into a coma? Oh god, I'm going to get killed. What happens to my all my pets if I-
As if God had heard my prayers, the boy's eyes fluttered open. My, what beautiful eyes he had. They weren't any rare color like blue or green. No, they were pitch black and I felt myself drowning in them. Like something was dragging me down into the depths and suffocating me. Yes, beautiful.
I was snapped out of my thoughts as he reached out and grabbed my hair. I yelped in pain as he pulled me closer.
"Watch where the fuck you're going," he said weakly with a following groan.
I stopped and shuddered. I knew that voice. I knew those eyes. His attitude, I knew that too!
Nicholas Parker. My first love.
