Ayla

December 24th:

Waking up today felt just like any other - except it's Christmas Eve. And I love Christmas. I couldn't wait to see my brother. It's been about four months since I last saw him, and I missed him badly. He wasn't able to come home for Thanksgiving due to work, but Christmas he would be here. Our whole family could be together for this holiday, and what's more magical and jolly than that?

It's 5:12 in the morning, and I have to be at work at 7:00. I'm a labor and delivery nurse, currently closing in on the halfway point of my second year in a midwifery program. Only one more year and a half until I will be Ayla Campbell, Certified Nurse Midwife, Doctor of Nursing Practice. This has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. Obstetrics are my life.

I have busted my ass to get where I am. I'm lucky to work around people who support and respect me, so the motivation is always flowing. My dream is to open a birth center here at the hospital where I work, as soon as I become a midwife. It's very possible that I could have a chance with that too. I have talked about it for about two years now, and I think I might be getting somewhere. Maybe. We'll see.

5:30. It's a good thing I only live about 20 minutes from work. Working on Christmas Eve isn't so bad, especially when you actually love your job. And working with someone you love doesn't hurt either. Today I get to work with Karen.

Karen is the labor and delivery coordinator, and she's like a second mother to me. We have become like two peas in a pod. About a year ago, she came back to Maryland from living in Australia for the last twenty plus years. Her husband owns an Australian based athletic clothing company named Klip. They came back to the states, because Chris, her husband, opened a second operating facility outside of Washington D.C. closer to the Baltimore Metropolitan area. Karen was thrilled for this move, because she grew up here in Maryland, and missed it. She adored Australia, and wanted to raise her children there, but coming back here now, working in the same hospital where she was trained - she became a gift to me.

I'm going to miss her so much when my hours change and my internship begins. I will hardly be down here in Labor and Delivery at the same time as Karen, and I'm going to be insanely busy.

But for today, it's me and her, a few other nurses, and hopefully some beautiful babies being born.

The drive in was a breeze; luckily there was minimal traffic due to it being the day before a holiday. I love walking through the halls when the hospital is quite. Sometimes it can seem so surreal, like you shouldn't actually be there. There are so few times where you get to experience a quiet hospital. So believe me, it's nice to actually see it once in a while.

When I walked in, to my surprise L & D was slow right along with the rest of the place.

"Good morning sweetheart!" Karen exclaimed when she saw me.

"Good morning! Merry Christmas Eve!" I smiled back.

"You too darling! Other than one lady back in room 5, and room 7 getting ready to be sent to post partum, not much going on yet," she said.

"Great."

"Hey Ayla!" I heard from behind me. It was one was one of the night nurses, Mallory.

"Hey girl! What's going on? You have room 5?" I asked.

"Nope, I had 7 and James is getting ready to take her to post partum right now. Lonnie's got 5."

"Awsome. Well I hope you have an excellent Christmas tomorrow! Enjoy your nice long 4 day staycation!" I hugged her as she was grabbing her bags, and about to head out.
