Shifted Axis

Pink flushed cheeks and wide eyed
she descends those stairs
blowing in like a forceful wind
lips chewed, nails missing

"They've changed me.
My very definition is upheaved.
I'm someone I don't even understand
Can't begin to know.
How is it even possible?"

I place my arms around her
sneaking whiffs of coconut shampoo
and lavender soap.
Unwilling to question
I let her come on her terms
its the only way it works.

"The stars moved.
That's what they say
The. Stars. Moved.
So now they've change us all!
Years of identity and groupings
Reduced to natures whim
because the stars moved?
Your a Taurus now mom
Imagine that?
A Cancer your whole life
Now, a Taurus!!"

I don't quite understand.
i've never been one to hold to groupings
never felt a need to connect myself
to others in a cosmic way.
I wouldn't even know my sign
if she weren't constantly telling me.
how fitting and important it was.

But I understand these cosmic shifts
events that cause foundation changes
things that make you feel your grounding
is less stable, more eggshell than cement.
and so I hold her firmly
and say "it could be fun, to reinvent."

She rolls her eyes as if I've offended
or belittled the core of her despair
but she doesn't withdraw-(a start)
from her back left pocket
a ting and vibration emerges.
her hands leave quickly
followed by her body

"Finally, someone who understands
a monumental crisis."

Her thumbs fly in response
as she clumps back up the stairs
leaving behind a warm shoulder
and the sweet smell of coconut
with just a hint of lavender.

According to my daughter you most likely have a new astrological sign. For those of you who feel as shifted as the stars- just imagine it as a chance to reinvent. For all you eye rollers who feel a deep injustice at your new sign, my condolences.
