Chapter One: New Beginnings

Paisley watched little Danny sway back and forth on his tire swing. She couldn't help but smile and reflect upon the previous years with her foster brother. She knew in the beginning that she should never have gotten attached to the toothy, pallid boy, but Paisley simply could not help it. Danny was an adorable munchkin and no matter how awful his mother was to Paisley, she still loved growing up with him.

"I sure am going to miss you kiddo," Paisley grinned towards Danny.

Paisley was transported from foster home to foster home throughout her whole life. She had no recognition of her biological parents and neither did anyone else within the small Townsville community. One night her infant body was dropped off outside the town orphanage; left to be taken in by anyone willing. From that day forward she was left with various families and never stayed anywhere longer than a year. That is until she met Danny.

Loretta and James Walker were two polar opposite parents. Loretta was strict, demanding, and disciplined while James tended to be more carefree and heart warming. They seemed like a ridiculous match, but they remained together. The odd couple was not looking to adopt another child but tended to house foster kids from time to time in order to receive a small check at the end of the month.

When Paisley arrived at their doorstep Danny became inseparable and reliant on her affection. Loretta could not stand this. Being the stern woman she was, Loretta did everything in her power to control and contain Paisley. But Paisley could not be delimited or controlled by anyone. She is a free spirit that runs against boundaries. Loretta's demands sounded like challenges to Paisley. At first she could not comprehend why, but everything became clear on her sixteenth birthday. That night changed everything.

After living with the Walkers for a year it became clear that Danny, only a three year old at the time, would not let Paisley leave. His attachment had grown and James grew found of her as well. All Loretta saw was a free babysitter who in the end cost her money. Their time together was about to end though, Paisley thought. Turning eighteen was the age Loretta demanded Paisley left to make a life of her own.

In ways Paisley understood and looked forward to her new beginning by herself, but Danny would always cause a sorrow in her heart to overwhelm her decision. She could have stayed close behind but for Paisley it was all or nothing. She was different then others and it was time for her to find out why.

Walking over towards Danny, Paisley's heart slowly began to break. She tried to coax him into the idea of her leaving months earlier, but he simply refused to believe. Now she actually was leaving and Danny had no choice but to believe it.

"Hey honey, what's wrong?" She gently asked.

Paisley knew exactly what was wrong but she wanted Danny to voice it. He needed to come to terms with her departure.

"I don't want you to leave Pay Pay!" Danny cried. The five year old flung himself towards her and she felt her heart shatter inch by inch. His old nick name for her only made matters worse.

Growing up without a true family is one heavy-hearted feeling, but leaving Danny, the only person Paisley could every call real family, is a whole other. But Paisley needed to move and she needed to find answers. Her whole existence had been a myth and her heart yearned for the truth. Where was her real family? Why did they disown her? And most importantly how on Earth could she possibly turn into a wolf? That was the big question.

Paisley remembered the first time she shifted. It was the night of her sixteenth birthday. She only knew her proper birthdate because of the pendant left on her neck when she was dropped off. The beautiful gold oval was the only object she truly treasured. Its' intricate gold swirls were flawless, and they outlined a P on the front of the chain. The back of the oval had her birth initials engraved. Never had she owned anything so beautiful. Stroking the smooth necklace often comforted her in times of need. During her first shift she was more worried about losing her necklace rather than the amount of pain she was in.
