Thrives & Cuffs

Jessica Carter POV

First step. Second step. Third step. Stop.

I sucked in a deep breath, my heart raced against my chest as I felt my nerves rise.

Go. Fourth step. Fifth step. Sixth step. Here.

"Jake, me and you need to speak right now." My hand wrapped around his wrist tightly, my adrenaline stopped me from feeling embarrassed the fact that I had caught most eyes by what I just did to Jake, and how my voice sounded.

"What do you want to talk about?" Jake asked, his arms folded over his chest with that innocent look in his eyes. I could see right past them.

He was the one who gave those keys to that gang, he's the one who made Tristan end up in the hospital!

"Don't play stupid with me, I know you're the one who handed those keys over to that gang." My voice was low, quiet but strong.

I wasn't going to let this situation slide. Tristan could of died there.

Jake cocked his head to the side, "I'm sorry that the mistake of a man you like ended up in the hospital for his own problems. I'll make sure to keep him in my prayers." His voice was filled with pure sarcasm and he took a step away from me but I followed him.

My eyebrows furrowed in anger, "You're a sick person Jake if you handed those keys over to Ty." I said, referred to the leader who was named Ty, I still remember his eyes that were filled with pure evil as he threw the knife up and stabbed Tristan.

"I have no idea what you're talking about, Carter." The smirk that danced on his lips made me believe something else.

"Anyways, Ty wasn't after Trisan. Probably after that rapist." His top lip raised in disgust at the thought of Mark.

"He's not a rapist!" I yelled loudly, our heads snapped towards the people who my voice caught the attention of, I have an apologetic smile as they continued their work.

"You keep saying that and maybe you'll believe it, you shouldn't believe a word that comes out of inmates. They're in here for a reason and most of them are compulsive liars. Just like Tristan, who has already played his game on you and you're falling for it. Tut tut. Thought you were smarter than that, Carter." Jake raised an eyebrow as he walked backwards, he finally gave me a salute and turned forward to walk off.

I was shocked by his words, how can someone act so innocent and clueless to something that they did?

Was what he said about Tristan really true? I still remember till this day that Tristan warned me about what he does, but I thought I was different. He treated me different, right? Or was that just his game?

No! I shouldn't let Jake's words get into my head.

"Carter!" My head whipped to the sound of a man's voice and I saw Caleb with pink cheeks.

My eyes widened, "Caleb, what are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be in the Home?"

Caleb shook his head, "That gang transferred so we are clear. Back to our normal prison life. Anyways, how's Tristan? Is he okay?"

I shrugged my shoulders, "I guess so. He's stable but doctors told me that anything could anything inside of him."

Caleb bit his bottom lip as he cursed underneath his breath, "Damn."

I nodded my head slowly, there was a silence between us until we both opened our mouths to say somethings. "You first."

"Lady's first." He gestured with his hand.
