It felt like he been standing in the doorway re-enacting the tragic scene - remembering the last moments of his life for hours; yet it had been mare seconds. He was dragged back to the present by the sensation of being tasered. As the medical team pushed the gurney right through him. It was a sensation he didn't care for and made a mental note not to let it happen again if he could help it. However he would soon come to realise it was a disposition that came with being a ghost.
He watched as the team rushed off with his body, contemplating whether to follow his body or return to Tessie. He decided to go with the body. He suspected under the current circumstances Tessie wouldn't be going anywhere soon, and he had a morbid curiosity to see what they were going to do with his body. By the time he caught up, the last two wheels of the gurney was passing over the threshold of the theatre door, then it swung shut in front of his.
He put his hand to the door and try to push it open, but his hand went through it. 'urh no electric current... good.' He proceeded to walk through the door; his thoughts turned to why he had not falling through the chair when he had sat down in front of Tes... 'Arh.' The tasered feeling again as a man wearing a white coat carrying a plastic blue and white container, which that reminded him of a small picnic cooler; walk right through him.
He shook his head he would never get use to that sensation. He gazed on in wonder as he saw several of those blue and white containers with some type of Crystalloid preservation solutions being filled up with his body parts. He watched as one by one each container received a part of him and then was removed from the room. Except for his heart, that was placed in a see-through box and connected to a monitor a device which after a short while allowed the heart to keep on beating.
The heart was removed from the room by another man in a white coat. Mark followed the man who was pushing the heart in a box monitoring device to another theatre. There he saw several people in green surgical gowns and mask. They were circling an operating table. On the table lay a man with his chest wide open and the surgeon was working busily removing his heart.
He watched as they place clamps on the arteries sealing them off, then cutting through them. It was fascinating to see the surgeon remove the old heart and replace it with his, then marvelled when after moments of manipulation the heart started to be beat. The monitor attached to him began to beep in a slow steady rhythm. Mark had been so intrigued by the whole thing he'd forgotten about Tessie distressed and alone in the room at the far end if the corridor.
He rushed back to the room where he had left Tessie, but she was gone. He decided he would check how she was doing later, and returned to the operating theatre. He watched as the man's chest was being stapled shut. Mark began to spectacle about the new owner of his heart. 'What type of man was he?' As though being drawn by an invisible thread he followed the porters as they wheeled the man into the recovery room. Looking over the shoulder of the nurse who would be in charge of the transplant patient. He read the file 'Drake Manning so that's his name. My heart now belongs to Mr Manning.'
Deciding to stay with Drake, Mark took a seat by his bed. He now had a clear view of him. 'He must be about 6' 4". It's hard to tell with him lying down. Possible early thirties; glancing at the chart Mark read Drake's date of birth - November 5th 1980; so he's 32.' He seemed to have an okay body structure. 'Handsome?... Mmm. I couldn't say I'm sure some women may find him attractive.' Laughing he thought. 'Well, he's not my type.'
Mark sat staring at Drake willing him to survive the surgery. 'You need to fight Drake buddy. You've got my heart and they's someone I hold dear residing there and you my friend are going to ensure she stays there safe and well.' Mark mused given the choice would he have chosen Drake to be the recipient? Was he worthy? 'He is now the keeper of the muscles I once owned filled with unconditional love for one woman. He has to be the one to save her from herself. He has to be...'
Knowing Tessie as he did, he knew she would withdraw into herself now he was gone. 'She will shut herself off, not allowing anyone else close enough to her to love or be loved. She had too many lost loves; her father, her mother and now me. I have to do everything in my power to make sure she does not end up bitter and alone. And like it or not, you Drake 'my man' you're going to help me.'
